Job description

Catholic Charities Washtenaw County is seeking a compassionate, organized, and experienced Adoption Case Manager to coordinate newborn adoption services for prospective adoptive families and members of the adoption circle. This position is responsible for providing comprehensive adoption services, including family assessments, adoptive parent preparation and education, matching and placement activities, legal coordination, post-placement supervision, and ongoing support services. The Adoption Case Manager plays a key role in promoting ethical, family-centered adoption practices while supporting children and families through every stage of the adoption journey.

The ideal candidate will have experience working in adoption services and a strong understanding of open adoption philosophy, trauma-informed care, and the unique needs of adoptive families, birth families, and adoptees. The candidate must possess excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, demonstrate empathy and cultural sensitivity, and be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team. Knowledge of the Michigan Adoption Code and adoption-related legal processes is preferred.

Responsibilities include conducting adoption orientations and consultations, completing home studies and updates, coordinating adoptive parent education programs, facilitating matching and placement activities, preparing adoption-related reports and legal documentation, coordinating court proceedings, and providing ongoing support to families before, during, and after placement. The position also supports community outreach efforts, educational programming, post-adoption support services, and collaboration with hospitals, attorneys, courts, mental health providers, and other community partners.

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (Master’s degree preferred), hold a current Michigan Licensed Bachelor Social Worker (LBSW) credential (LMSW preferred), have adoption experience, and maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license. A strong commitment to ethical adoption practices, confidentiality, and compliance with state licensing and accreditation standards is required.

While most work is completed during regular business hours, flexible scheduling is required. Some evening and weekend work may be necessary to support adoptive families and placement activities. Participation in a shared on-call rotation is required to help provide responsive adoption services when needed.

Total compensation includes mileage reimbursement, a comprehensive benefits package with employer contribution, 401(k) retirement option, paid time off, and a paid holiday schedule that includes the week between Christmas and New Year's. The Adoption Case Manager is provided with the tools necessary to effectively perform job responsibilities, including participation in ongoing professional development and continuing education opportunities.

This position qualifies for a $1,250 Welcome Bonus (some restrictions apply).

Catholic Charities Washtenaw County has proudly served the community for more than 65 years through acts of compassion, mercy, and service.
