Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Admissions, Southwestern’s Office of Admission is seeking a gregarious and dynamic individual to serve as an entry‑level Admission Counselor. The Admission Counselor supports prospective students and their families throughout the admission process by providing accurate information, guidance, and timely follow‑up. This role requires effective communication, organization, and relationship‑building skills to promote the university’s educational opportunities and assist individuals in navigating application and enrollment steps.

The position involves evening and weekend work during peak admission cycles in the fall and spring, as well as consistent travel within Texas and across the United States to conduct recruitment activities. The Admission Counselor is responsible for meeting established recruitment goals, maintaining engagement with prospective students, and contributing to the overall effectiveness of the Enrollment Services Division.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate all phases of recruitment within an assigned geographic area, including visiting and presenting at high schools, attending college fair programs, and planning receptions and promotional programs.
  • Conduct in‑person and virtual information sessions and engage with prospective students, their families, and support networks.
  • Conduct in‑person and virtual scholarship and admission interviews.
  • Read and evaluate applications and provide input in the student candidate selection process.
  • Develop, maintain, and strengthen ongoing professional relationships with prospective students, high school counselors, community partners, and alumni to achieve enrollment objectives.
  • Articulate the university message and strengthen Southwestern’s brand to prospective students, families, high school counselors, alumni, and community members.
Additional Duties
  • Complete appropriate department paperwork, including travel expense reports and interview reports.
  • Address telephone, electronic, and written inquiries regarding admission status of prospective students.
  • Interact with Southwestern University administrators, faculty, staff, students, and alumni at on‑campus and off‑campus events.
  • Continuously stay up to date on university updates and topics related to higher education.
  • Assume additional projects and responsibilities as required by the Director of Admission and the Enrollment Services Leadership Team.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Ability to safely lift and transport materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to travel to assigned locations as required.
  • Ability and willingness to travel using a variety of transportation methods.
  • Demonstrated time‑management and prioritization skills to meet established goals.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, or similar tools).
  • Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Organizational and analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Sound judgment and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and maintain productivity in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Demonstrated professionalism in interactions with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
Additional Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from a Liberal Arts institution.
  • Experience in an admission setting as an undergraduate.
  • Proficiency or fluency in a second language, preferably Spanish.
  • Extensive knowledge of Southwestern University and the programs offered.
Work Conditions
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
  • Evening and weekend work expected, particularly during peak periods in the fall and spring.
  • Weekend commitments typically include approximately 15 or more events annually; evening hours vary based on recruitment cycle demands.
  • Frequent travel within Texas and across the United States.
  • Work involves in‑person and virtual engagement with prospective students and stakeholders.
