Job summary

City Care is seeking an Advocate to support neighbors experiencing unsheltered homelessness by connecting them with shelter services, resources, and compassionate support. The role emphasizes hospitality, data-entry accuracy, and collaborative teamwork to advance housing stability in the Tulsa area.

You will answer calls, document bed reservations, assist with donations, and coordinate with shelter leadership and partners. A High School diploma and reliable transport are required.

Qualifications

  • Current Oklahoma Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a team.
  • Understanding of poverty/homelessness and related issues.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out City Care mission, vision, and values.
  • Develop a network of community resources and partners.
  • Encourage guests to engage in housing services.
  • Provide hospitality, confidentiality, teamwork, and safety.
  • Answer calls and provide shelter information.
  • Take and document bed reservations.
  • Direct calls to staff.
  • Remain calm and helpful, including during crises.
  • Receive, log, and sort incoming mail for residents.
  • Manage donations and deliveries appropriately.
  • Communicate with staff about large donations.
  • Provide donation receipts as needed.
  • Perform light clerical duties and data entry.
  • Maintain a tidy reception area.
  • Assist with special projects and shelter leadership tasks.
  • Coordinate with development for fundraising and shelter tours.
  • Coordinate with resource coordinator for events.

City Care is searching for the right person with a knack for seeing great potential in others and working as part of a team with the shared goal of motivating change toward that potential. This Advocate will understand the complexity of the intersection of poverty, homelessness, mental illness and substance use for our neighbors experiencing unsheltered homelessness.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Carry out the mission, vision, and values of City Care.
  • Maintain familiarity with community resources and develop a network of collaborative partners.
  • Encourage guests to engage in services that promote housing stability.
  • Participate in a culture of professional hospitality, confidentiality, teamwork, and safety among guests, interns, volunteers, staff, and partners.
  • Answer incoming calls and provide information about shelter services.
  • Take and document bed reservation requests using established procedures.
  • Direct calls or messages to the appropriate staff.
  • Maintain a calm, helpful tone with all callers, including those in crisis.
  • Receive, log, and sort incoming mail for shelter residents.
  • Accept, document, and store incoming donations and deliveries appropriately.
  • Communicate with staff regarding large or urgent donations.
  • Provide donation receipts as needed.
  • Perform light clerical duties such as data entry, filing, and updating logs.
  • Maintain a tidy, welcoming reception space.
  • Assist with occasional special projects or tasks as assigned by shelter leadership.
  • Coordination with the development team to assist with fundraising tasks and shelter tours as needed.
  • Coordination with the resource coordinator to assist with shelter events and activities for guests.
Requirements

  • Understanding of the complexity of the intersection of poverty, homelessness, mental illness, substance use and recovery
  • Skilled in verbal and written communication
  • Computer literate, resulting in error-free data entry
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • A calm, patient, and respectful demeanor, especially with individuals in crisis
  • Ability to multitask and handle stressful and complex situation
  • Ability to work as a member of a team to accomplish shared goals
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Current Oklahoma Driver's License
  • Reliable transportation
Preferred:
  • Prior experience in nonprofit, shelter, or customer service settings
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care or working with vulnerable populations
  • Bilingual (Spanish or other common local language)
  • BHCM-I or II; PRSS Certification; Associate's Degree, or equivalent, lived or work experience
Full Time / Part-Time

Salary Range: $14.23 hr. with training bonus opportunities 4x in your first year
