Job description

The City of Detroit’s Renew Detroit Program has an immediate need to fill an Administrative Special Services I (ARPA) - Home Repair Housing Inspector position. The appointment period is approximately Summer through Fall 2025 to assist with home assessments to determine the potential for roof or window replacements. Under general supervision, the Administrative Special Services I (ARPA)-Home Repair Housing Inspectorinspects occupied homes and fills out a digital inspection checklist form. The housing inspector must be detail oriented, possess strong interpersonal skills, and be knowledgeable of the rehabilitation of occupied residential properties in the City of Detroit.

The Administrative Special Services I (ARPA)- Home RepairHousing Inspectorwill work under the direction of the Construction Analyst. This is a temporary, project with weekly hours based on daily scheduled appointments up to 40 hours a week. The start date is effective immediately and ending no later than December 2025.

  • Navigate to various properties within the city based on an assigned schedule for the day
  • Contact residents on appointment schedule to advise them of appointment time prior to arrival
  • Perform initial walkthrough of participant homes after verifying resident identity
  • Assist residents with completing required forms accurately including uploading documents to cloud based storage system
  • Fill out a digital inspection checklist on a smartphone device
  • Capture detailed photographs of the property using a smartphone device during the assessment and upload them to a cloud-based storage system
  • Submit accurate and timely checklists daily and review work to correct discrepancies
  • Track odometer readings and submit mileage information accurately via an online portal
  • Other duties as assigned
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Must have a minimum of one(1) year of experience inresidential construction or roofing
    1. Roofing or window knowledge is strongly desired
    2. Knowledgeable of construction safety practices
  • Licenses and or certificates required: Valid Driver’s License & Insurance
  • A reliable vehicle that is fueled and maintained.
    • Employees will use their own vehicle and be reimbursed for fuel usage.
  • Ability to perform data entry and capture detailed photographs into web & cloud-based tools via a smartphone or tablet device with minimal errors
  • Ability to use basic construction & measuring tools safely and accurately (i.e. tape measurers, laser distance measurers, ladders, etc.)
  • Familiarity with uploading scanned documents via a smartphone device into a cloud-based storage system
  • Ability to use navigational tools to drive to locations for appointments in a timely manner
  • Proficiency in verbal/written communications
  • Familiarity with and passion for Detroit, a must.

The standard work hours of the position are 9am to 5:30pm with a 30-minute lunch; occasional evening and weekend work hours as needed.
