Job summary

Columbia County Georgia in Georgia seeks an administrative support staffer for the Traffic Engineering & Operations Department. You will assist with data collection, traffic studies, and support programs like Traffic Count and Speed Hump initiatives.

You will help monitor the Traffic Control Center, coordinate with officials, and handle routine administrative tasks. A high school diploma and exposure to CAD and MS Office are preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; college or vocational/technical training is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel and PowerPoint; CAD experience preferred.
  • IMSA Work Zone and IMSA Markings/Signs certifications desirable within 18 months.

Responsibilities

  • Perform administrative duties including payroll processing and coding purchase card orders.
  • Provide direct support to the Traffic Engineering & Operations Department as described.
  • Conduct various traffic engineering and operational studies and analyses.
  • Assist in administering traffic programs and monitoring operations of the Traffic Control Center.
  • Respond to citizen requests and document conversations appropriately.

The incumbent provides direct support to the Traffic Engineering & Operations Department in carrying out the duties and goals of the Department as directed by the Department Manager.

The incumbent will be responsible for supporting the Department in performing various traffic engineering and operational studies. These studies will include performing data collection, analysis, and traffic engineering related to:

  • Volume, speed, and delay data for vehicles and pedestrians
  • Traffic operations and capacity
  • Travel times and delays
  • Multi-way stop signs
  • Speed hump installation warrants
  • Intersection and roadway improvements

The incumbent will assist in the administration of the following traffic programs:

  • Traffic Count Program
  • Traffic Accident Program
  • Speed Hump Program
  • Street Light / Safety Light Program

The incumbent will assist with the monitoring and the operation of the Traffic Control Center to include, but not be limited to, remote operation of traffic cameras and signals as needed.

Contact is typically with Federal, State, and Local officials, as well as County Management, Division Directors, Department Directors/Managers, co-workers, outside engineers, surveyors, contractors, utility personnel, and the general public. Contact with individuals representing the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Columbia County Sheriff's Office, and Columbia County Board of Education is common.

The work of this position is typically performed within an office with the incumbent intermittently sitting, standing, walking, stooping, occasionally lifting light or heavy objects weighing less than 25 pounds, using tools that require a high degree of manual dexterity.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Performing administrative duties such as processing payroll, coding purchase card orders, ordering departmental supplies, and other administrative duties as needed.
  • Providing direct support to the Traffic Engineering & Operations Department as described.
  • Performing various traffic engineering and operational studies as described.
  • Assisting in the administration of various traffic programs as described.
  • Assisting in the monitoring and operation of the Traffic Control Center as described.
  • Responding to citizen requests, including recording and documenting conversations as appropriate.
  • Performing other related duties and tasks as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of computer software for database maintenance and word processing.
  • Ability to learn basic traffic engineering principles, operations, and study methodologies.
  • Ability to learn traffic studies and capacity analysis applications.
  • Ability to learn federal and state guidelines concerning traffic safety.
  • Ability to learn applicable warrants governing the installation of traffic control devices.
  • Ability to learn applicable County Ordinances relating to the position’s responsibilities.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED; preferably supplemented by college or vocational/technical school.
  • Must be familiar with the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Preference given for experience using CAD and some knowledge reviewing engineering plans.
  • Must have or be able to readily obtain valid IMSA Work Zone certification and IMSA Level I Markings and
  • Signs certification within eighteen (18) months of employment.
  • Must possess or have ability to obtain a Georgia Driver’s License within six (6) months of employment

A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
