Job description

The purpose of this intermediate level position is to perform intermediate work assignments involving independent judgment to determine course of action consistent with established functional and organization's policies and tax code. This position requires familiarity of semi-complex concepts in functional area to perform semi-routine work activities with limited supervision. It is critical to be able to think and act independently on assigned projects. Typically, will interface with departmental staff and commitment to customer service is important. Exercises discretion and judgment within policy. Works under limited supervision.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma required. Two years of college or equivalent work experience preferred

2+ years of related work experience in customer service or mailroom

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

General Responsibilities

  • Perform data research and convey accurate results.
  • Provide clerical and administrative assistance to support department.
  • Explore problems and render decisions.
  • Keep current on new and revised tax laws and proper tax code.
  • Greet visitors and callers, route and resolve information requests.
  • Keep team and supervisor informed regarding the progress and status of work activities.
  • Assist other work groups within the District based on workloads at any given time.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Specific Responsibilities
  • Maintain a professional and courteous manner.
  • Provide technical and clerical support by researching various interdepartmental documents.
  • Process arbitration applications.
  • Review, verify, research and route legal documents.
  • Review, verify and manage state comptroller documents.
  • Create new causes and key information into CMS system.
  • Prepare, scan, index, and enter data.
  • Perform quality control to ensure information accuracy.
  • Act as Timekeeper for Workday payroll system.
  • Facilitate new and more efficient operating procedures.
  • Assist Appraisers, in-house and contracted law firms with district court case.
  • Maintain production log.
  • Purchase and manage supplies and equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Positions in this class typically require repetitive motions, sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time in an office setting.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require repetitive motions, walking, talking and hearing. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time with ability to reach, bend and move up/down on steps. Must be able to lift up to 50-pound file boxes. The position requires considerable concentration, creativity and ability to manage time effectively. The position is subject to stress caused by a changing public environment, mandatory deadlines and heavy workload. Requires the ability to ask questions that will bring forth the information needed to make sound decisions.

The Harris Central Appraisal District appraises taxable property for the county, cities, school districts, and more than 300 special districts such as MUDs that levy property taxes within the district's boundaries. The district appraises more than 1.7 million property parcels annually. The district also administers exemptions and special appraisals, such as productivity valuation of qualified agricultural land, and determines the taxable situs of property.
