Job summary

William & Mary in Virginia seeks qualified individuals for part-time adjunct teaching appointments in the Department of Applied Science. Beginning Spring 2027, instructors may teach AP SC 251 Engineering Design and related courses.

Adjunct faculty are expected to prepare syllabi, deliver instruction, assess student learning, and hold office hours. Remote teaching is rare and subject to approval; benefits are not provided.

Qualifications

• Masters or PhD in Engineering Physics, Engineering, Applied Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
• M.S., Ph.D., or terminal degree in Engineering or related field by appointment time (Aug 10 for fall or Jan 10 for spring).
• Prior academic teaching experience.

Responsibilities

• Teaching assigned undergraduate and/or graduate courses depending on unit need.
• Preparing syllabi and course materials.
• Delivering instruction and assessing student learning.
• Holding office hours.
• Fulfilling other instructional duties as needed by the department.

Job Description Summary

The Department of Applied Science at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, is recruiting a pool of qualified individuals for possible part‑time adjunct teaching appointments. Beginning Spring 2027, the department anticipates instructional needs inAPSC 251 Engineering Design. Within the School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics, adjunct faculty may be responsible for:

• Teaching assigned undergraduate and/or graduate courses depending on unit need
• Preparing syllabi and course materials
• Delivering instruction and assessing student learning
• Holding office hours
• Fulfilling other instructional duties consistent with departmental needs

Required Qualifications

• Applicants must hold a Masters or Ph.D. in Engineering Physics, Engineering, Applied Science or a related field, or equivalent experience and qualifications.
• An M.S., Ph.D., or other appropriate terminal degree, or ABD status, inEngineering or a related field at the time of appointment (August10 for fall or January10 for spring). Previous academic teaching experience.

Conditions of Employment

This position is also not eligible for work visa sponsorship. This is a part‑time position restricted to the term to which it is assigned and hired and is not eligible for benefits. The position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional evenings, weekends, or overnight work as needed to meet operational requirements. As part‑time exempt employees, adjunctsare subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program. Total hours worked may not exceed an average of 29 hours per week over a twelve‑month period beginning May1 each year. Total adjunct work hours for part‑time employment from May1 through April30 may not exceed 1,500 hours,generallyequating to up to 14 credit hours for fall/spring and up to 6 for summer, not to exceed 18 credit hours for the year. Adjuncts maintain an in‑person presence for the duration of their appointment.Remote teaching opportunities are rare and subject to approval.
