Job Summary

The Instructor of Speech’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing instruction for students enrolled in Public Speaking/Speech courses at the Lamar Institute of Technology. This position reports directly to the Department Chair of General Education and is a part‑time, exempt position. Hours vary depending on the need and course schedule, and may include day, evening, and/or weekend classes. This is not a posting for regular adjunct instructors. Classes will be delivered at the Sam Houston State University Campus.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Teach courses as scheduled and actively engage students in the learning process
  • Maintain ethical and professional behavior
  • Attend adjunct faculty meetings
  • Assess courses on departmental and institutional levels
  • Complete required training, such as Blackboard Online Instructor Certification and Title IX Training, FERPA, etc.
  • Utilize LIT’s Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) and Sam Houston State University (SHSU) Faculty Online Development Training to continually hone and improve professional knowledge and teaching skills
  • Maintain knowledge of and adherence to the policies and procedures contained in the TSUS and LIT Policies and Procedures Manual
  • Other related duties as assigned
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Education/Qualifications Required
  • A master’s degree in Communication or Speech or master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in Communication/Speech from a regionally accredited institution
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of teaching methodologies/pedagogical strategies
  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Possess good time management skills
Preferred Education/Qualifications
  • Experience teaching in higher education
  • Doctorate degree in subject area
  • Related field and/or industry certifications
Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to: remain in a stationary position for most of the time; occasionally move about inside an office to access documents, office equipment, etc.; constantly operate a computer or other office equipment, such as a printer or copy machine.
