Charles R. Drew University is located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles and was founded in 1966 in the wake of the Watts uprising. CDU was founded to address inadequate medical care in the region and to provide equitable medical education opportunities for underrepresented students.

The Program Director / Instructor (PD/Instructor) for the Lactation Education Program (LEP2) is responsible for the development, implementation, instruction, and continuous improvement of CDU’s lactation education and certification program. This role integrates program leadership, curriculum development, accreditation oversight, and teaching responsibilities to ensure a high-quality, evidence-based educational experience. The PD/Instructor leads program operations in alignment with accreditation standards (LEAARC, IBLCE, CAAHEP, WASC, CEPH) and supports CDU’s mission to advance health equity and serve medically underserved communities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership in the development, implementation, and management of the Lactation Education Program (LEP2).
  • Develops, revises, and maintains documentation required for accreditation and program approval processes.
  • Ensures compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards (LEAARC, IBLCE, CAAHEP, WASC, CEPH).
  • Establishes program policies, workflows, and operational systems across the department and university.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, including clinical partners and community organizations.
  • Develops and maintains clinical placement opportunities for students.
  • Supervises Instructor and staff supporting program operations.
  • Develops recruitment strategies and supports enrollment efforts for student cohorts
  • Monitors and evaluates program effectiveness through data collection and continuous quality improvement.
  • Represents the program at institutional, community, and professional meetings and events.
  • Leads the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the lactation education curriculum.
  • Ensures curriculum alignment with IBLCE exam blueprint, accreditation standards, and evidence-based practices.
  • Develops course syllabi, learning objectives, lesson plans, and instructional materials.
  • Integrates clinical and experiential learning into the curriculum.
  • Designs and implements assessment strategies to evaluate student learning outcomes.
  • Collaborates with Instructor to enhance instructional delivery and curriculum effectiveness.
  • Supports accreditation review processes and prepares curriculum-related documentation.
  • Stays current with trends and research in lactation education and public health.

Teaching & Instructor Responsibilities

  • Teaches assigned courses in online, hybrid, or in-person formats.
  • Develops and modifies course content, including lectures, assignments, and instructional materials.
  • Aligns course objectives with program and institutional learning outcomes.
  • Evaluates student performance using appropriate assessment tools and rubrics.
  • Maintains office hours and supports student learning and success.
  • Utilizes the university’s learning management system (e.g., Blackboard) for course delivery.
  • Serves as a professional role model and promotes ethical and evidence-based practice.
  • Participates in Instructor meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.

Student & Community Engagement

  • Supports student success, engagement, and professional development.
  • Demonstrates commitment to working with diverse and underserved populations.
  • Promotes lactation education and awareness within CDU and surrounding communities.
  • Contributes to initiatives addressing maternal-child health disparities and health equity.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

Qualifications/Requirements:

EDUCATION:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Public Health, Education, Nursing, or related field required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in lactation practice and education
  • Experience in curriculum development and instructional design
  • Teaching experience in higher education or workforce training preferred.
  • Experience with accreditation processes preferred.

Certification

  • Current International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS:

  • Strong knowledge of lactation science, maternal-child health, and public health principles.
  • Understanding of adult learning theory and evidence-based teaching practices.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and underserved communities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Instructor, staff, and community partners.

Compensation:

  • $50,000 - $55,000

Position Status:

  • Part-Time, Exempt
