Job Title

Adjunct Instructor

Summary

An adjunct instructor is responsible for teaching, service, and related administrative activities, which may include academic advising, program design, and student mentoring.

Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators
  • Teach course sessions in an organized way, providing time for reflection, discussion, and application of ideas.
  • Develop adaptive thinking and problem‑solving skills using examples, encouraging students to question ideas, and adjusting instruction when needed.
  • Provide feedback on tests or assignments, use assessment results to offer extra help or extended learning opportunities.
  • Establish a positive, productive, and respectful classroom environment; enforce university policies and inform the appropriate official of violations.
  • Distribute the syllabus on the first class meeting; give written notice of substantial changes as needed.
  • Require the use of course texts as warranted by purchase.
  • Assist students with assignments/assessments promptly; administer exams or other evaluative activities during scheduled final exam times.
  • Determine final grades according to the syllabus method.
Mentoring
  • Promote volunteer opportunities, research with students, curricular enhancements, tutoring, resume‑building initiatives, responsible citizenship, leadership opportunities, and healthy lifestyles.
  • Serve as an example of professionalism and meet additional dean‑requested requirements.
Shared Responsibility
  • Engage in scholarly activities and creative endeavors supporting the university’s academic mission.
  • Supervise laboratories, independent study, and off‑campus learning such as practicums and internships.
  • Participate in shared governance, volunteering for events, and recruiting activities.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal effectiveness, respect, teamwork, and coordination with colleagues.
Subject Matter Expertise

Design, develop, and teach assigned undergraduate and graduate courses and seminars.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Valid State of Missouri paramedic license.
  • EMS Instructor credential preferred.
  • Instructor qualification in industry certification courses (ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, AMLS) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; critical thinking and problem‑solving ability; organizational skills and capacity to handle multiple tasks; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Canvas, and CAMS.

Work Environment

General office and/or classroom conditions.

Physical Abilities
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
