Course Descriptions
Concepts in Algebra (MTH 1000)

A one semester course designed to develop fundamental algebraic and problem-solving concepts and skills. Topics include linear, quadratic, square root, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions and equations. This course emphasizes individual investigation and problem solving to enhance students’ understanding of algebraic models and the problem-solving process. Students will work independently and in groups, with the assistance of the professor and course assistant(s), through an in-class and online experience. A laptop/iPad and a scientific calculator are required. This course is open only to students whose Placement Assessment results indicate that they need further preparation for subsequent mathematics courses.

Basic Statistics (MTH 1111)

Basic methods of statistical inference including the organization and analysis of data, sampling theory, point and interval estimation, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression analysis, and analysis of variance. Statistical software will be used throughout this course. MTH 1111 is not open to students with credit for MTH 1110, MTH 2527, or MTH 1505.

Applied Statistics and Probability for Engineers (MTH 1505)

A calculus-based introduction to applied statistical and probability methods commonly used in engineering. Topics include descriptive statistics, probability counting methods, discrete and continuous random variables, point estimation, linear regression, the Central Limit Theorem, confidence intervals and hypothesis tests for mean and proportion of one and two-sample statistics.
