Job Description Summary
Adjunct Instructors facilitate student learning and continuously develop instructional strategies that meet the needs of students and employers, promoting student success. They are dynamic partners for both students and the College, working beyond the classroom to ensure success, exemplifying core values, and demonstrating commitment to excellence in program/course content and delivery. They collaborate in a dynamic environment, innovate to meet evolving program and industry needs, and use technology to support learning and teaching. Typically, an adjunct instructor will be hired to teach specific open classes based on qualifications and availability.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Learning Facilitation - Foster student learning by developing appropriate instructional strategies to meet diverse student needs and support student engagement. Employ learning experiences that integrate multiple delivery methodologies and instructional technologies to maximize student success, such as hybrid, in-person, virtual, and online course delivery.
- Assessment - Assess student learning and provide regular feedback to help students be successful. Use data to measure quality outcomes related to course success and learning and implement improvement strategies based on the evidence.
- Classroom Management - Fulfill assigned schedule, maintain accurate student attendance and grade records, maintain instructional environment with emphasis on safety, housekeeping, and equipment security, and ensure opportunities for student engagement evaluation.
- Team Participation - Support the college by engaging with the department, as well as staying current with internal and external changes and initiatives.
- Business & Community Engagement - Build and maintain ongoing relationships with community, industry, and clinical partners. Proactively promote the College and our programs.
- Student Success & Support - Serve as an advocate for students and collaborate with Student Services staff to retain students, close achievement gaps, and help all students be successful.
- Professional Development - Continually improve knowledge and skills in emerging trends, current occupational practices and teaching through professional development activities, and current employment in the field. Maintain Faculty Quality Assurance System requirements and licensure required to maintain individual and program accreditation.
- Curriculum Development - If needed, develop curriculum and instructional materials that are competency‑based, current, consistent with employer expectations, and aligned with the college policy on the level of required documentation.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minor in ESL, TEFL, VESL, TESL, Applied Linguistics, Bilingual Education, or Foreign Language instruction (Master’s degree preferred), OR
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a combination of 15 semester credits in ESL, TEFL, VESL, TESL, Applied Linguistics, Bilingual Education, or Foreign Language instruction (Master’s degree preferred).
- Experience delivering instruction by alternative methods such as online in synchronous and asynchronous modalities is preferred.
- Familiarity with computer applications, particularly Collaborate, Blackboard, Microsoft Office, Teams, OERs, and other programs that promote student success is preferred. Knowledge of a foreign language is highly desirable.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- Proficiency utilizing learning management system.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Adapt quickly to changing demands, assignments, and circumstances to meet student needs.
- Engage in continuous improvement in the quality of instruction by embracing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods.
- Upon hire, maintain Faculty Quality Assurance System requirements and licensure required by other agencies to maintain individual and program accreditation, if applicable.
- Prior teaching or training experience preferred.
- Qualified per FVTC requirements at time of, and throughout employment as an instructor. Must also meet and maintain Higher Learning Commission (HLC) requirements, Faculty Quality Assurance Standards (FQAS), and/or other job‑specific licensing standards.
- Prior to hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining suitability and competence to perform the position.
Physical Requirements
- Sitting: Requires extended periods of sitting while performing tasks and utilizing computer systems.
- Mobility: Occasional mobility may be necessary for attending meetings, office tours, or events.
- Fine Motor Skills: Requires precise hand movements or manual dexterity for activities such as writing on a whiteboard or using instructional technology.
- Repetitive Motions: Capacity to perform repetitive motions, such as typing, without discomfort or injury.
- Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills are essential for interacting with employees, candidates, and stakeholders.
Work Environment
- Work can be completed in a virtual environment.
- Work will be completed in a hybrid environment, both in person and virtually.
- Work is typically performed in a classroom.
- Work environment may change based upon college needs.
Pay
Hourly pay rate: $45.00 per hour. Pay is based on a variety of factors, including experience, qualifications, education, relevant certifications, internal equity, and market data.

Additional Information
Adjunct instructors are hired on a per‑course basis. Total hours range from approximately 3 to no more than 8 hours per week, varying by day, evening, and weekend classes. Courses are taught in traditional classroom and alternative delivery formats.
