Job summary

Southern Oregon University is seeking qualified individuals to teach courses within the School of Education. Job description

Position Summary

Individuals appointed from this pool will have the primary responsibility to teach courses within the School of Education. These courses may include undergraduate and graduate offerings in education studies, early childhood education, and other specialty areas such as special education, adult education, and higher education leadership. Adjuncts may also serve as supervisors of student field experiences and, where qualified, provide administrative support.

Responsibilities
  • Teach assigned courses, including preparation, direct instruction, assessment, and student contact outside of class (office hours, appointments, email).
  • Present complex concepts to diverse learners and respond to student questions in real time.
  • Maintain course and curriculum plans, offer instruction in instructional technology, and, when applicable, provide lab or workshop experience with instrumentation.
  • Compare and support student learning and assessment outcomes.
  • Engage in professional development to maintain currency in the discipline taught.
  • Participate in programmatic and institutional service, including admission, academic advising, and committee work.
  • Attend occasional training or professional development on campus or off‑site and adjust working hours to meet course scheduling needs.
  • Comply with background‑check requirements and mandated reporting obligations under Oregon law.
Qualifications
  • Initial appointment at Instructor level requires a Master’s or terminal degree in the discipline taught, or a Bachelor’s degree plus equivalency of a Master’s through professional experience.
  • Demonstrated teaching potential and familiarity with discipline‑specific equipment.
  • For Adjunct Assistant Professor appointments, a terminal degree is required, or a Master’s degree in progress toward a terminal degree.
  • Preferred qualifications include an earned Master’s degree in the discipline taught, a record of teaching excellence, and active participation in the university community.
  • Professional experience equivalent to one academic year of full‑time college teaching, or a combination of part‑time teaching experience while a graduate student.
Benefits

Position is not eligible for benefits. Compensation is term‑by‑term: $650 per ELU for non‑terminally prepared instructors and $750 per ELU for terminally prepared instructors. Graduate‑level courses may receive a higher rate.

Employment Conditions

Workload is typically less than 7.5 ELU per term, but may reach up to 15 ELU. Assignments may be first‑year seminar, online/hybrid, or campus classes and may include day, evening, or weekend courses. Applicants must be willing to travel and attend training programs as required.
