Job summary

Salve Regina University in Newport, RI invites applications for adjunct faculty to teach HIS 113 and HIS 114 on campus. The contract is semester-based and courses are held in-person on the Newport campus. Responsibilities include developing syllabi, delivering lectures, proctoring exams, grading, and maintaining weekly office hours.

Preferred candidates hold a Ph.D. in history; a master's degree with teaching experience is required.

Qualifications

• A minimum of a master's degree in history, along with college-level teaching experience
• Teach in-person, on-campus classes at the scheduled class times
• Prepare, proctor and grade examinations
• Grade and return student assignments, examinations, etc. in a timely manner
• Provide a course syllabus at the start of the semester using the Simple Syllabus program
• Basic use of the Canvas learning management system to disseminate syllabus, and other course material to students
• Hold weekly office hours (1 hour minimum)
• Use Salve email to send and receive official email correspondence with students, staff, and administrators
• Ph.D. in history strongly preferred

Responsibilities

• Teach HIS 113: History of the United States to 1877 and HIS 114: History of the United States since 1877 on campus
• Develop, deliver and assess course content and examinations
• Proctor and grade examinations and assignments
• Provide timely feedback and maintain ongoing communication with students

Job Description:

CONTRACT TYPE: Semester based.

The Department of History is seeking adjunct faculty to teachsections of HIS 113: U.S. History to 1877 and HIS 114: U.S. Historysince 1877. Courses will be held in-person on our campus inNewport, RI.

HIS 113: History of the United States to 1877 (3 Credits)

This survey course covers political, social, religious, economicand cultural trends in America from the Jamestown settlement in1607 through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Topics include thedevelopment of slavery, concepts of religious freedom,industrialization and westward expansion. Special attention is paidto the role Newport played in the Colonial and Revolutionaryperiod.

HIS 114: History of the United States since 1877 (3 Credits)

This survey course covers political, social, religious, economicand cultural trends in America from the end of Reconstructionthrough the end of the Cold War. Topics include America's rise as aworld power, Progressivism, the women's movement and the civilrights movement. Special attention is paid to the role that Newportplayed during the Gilded Age.

Required :

• A minimum of a master's degree in history, along withcollege-level teaching experience


• Teach in-person, on-campus classes at the scheduled classtimes


• Prepare, proctor and grade examinations


• Grade and return student assignments, examinations, etc. in atimely manner


• Provide a course syllabus at the start of the semester usingthe Simple Syllabus program


• Basic use of the Canvas learning management system todisseminate syllabus, and other course material to students. (Helpusing this system is available, if needed.)
