Job summary

Ivy Tech Community College seeks an adjunct faculty member in Sociology to teach assigned courses on a part-time, weekday schedule. You will deliver instruction, develop course materials, and maintain student records in alignment with college policies and FERPA guidelines.

Responsibilities include engaging students with active teaching strategies, monitoring performance, and coordinating with program leadership while upholding diversity and inclusion.

  • Must have strong working knowledge of current technologies appropriate to area of instruction and meet faculty credentials as outlined in the ASOM 7.1 for the specific area(s) of instruction.
  • Demonstrates appreciation, respect, and promotion of diversity of people, styles, and views.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers assigned classes in accordance with College policy and course objectives.
  • Uses technology to enhance instructional methods.
  • Develops/maintains course outlines, syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, tests, and materials; maintains student records and grades.
  • Engages with students to create a positive Ivy Tech experience and uses active classroom teaching strategies.
  • Monitors and documents student performance; provides interventions and academic supports.
  • Interacts professionally and complies with College policies and guidelines.
  • Implements emergency and safety procedures for classrooms and labs.

Job description

Adjunct Faculty are hired each semester on an as-needed basis. Adjunct Faculty are responsible for creating a learning environment that assists students in reaching their goals; and for providing effective instruction and assessment within the framework of common syllabi provided.

COMPENSATION:

Part-time Weekdays, $47.35/contact hour

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Facilitates student learning by delivering assigned classes in accordance with College policy and course objectives.
  • Makes optimal use of available technology to enhance instructional methods.
  • Develops/maintains course outlines, syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, tests, and materials. Maintains accurate student records, grades, and other requirements.
  • Engages with students in meaningful and productive ways that impact student learning and leads to a positive experience with Ivy Tech Community College, shows evidence of developing and implementing active classroom teaching strategies focused on engaging students with their learning (curricular).
  • Monitor and document student performance throughout the semester, including use of technology for academic advising alerts; provide necessary interventions to include communication with students, tutoring and other academic supports, and referrals to appropriate college resources.
  • Interacts with students and co-workers in a professional and cooperative manner, complies with College policies, campus guidelines and expectations.
  • Ensures knowledge of and implements emergency and safety procedures for classrooms, labs and all learning environments.

SOCIOLOGY DISCIPLINE STANDARD

A qualified faculty member in sociology meets the discipline standard through one of two routes:

  • 1) Possesses an earned master's or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in sociology, social work, or social psychology, or
  • 2) Possesses an earned master's or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in any field with 18 hours in sociology and/or in any field with 18 graduate semester hours in sociology related courses, including a course in statistics and/or research methodology.
