Job Description Summary

Responsible to prepare and deliver Philosophy coursework in engaging, innovative, and discipline-appropriate ways that reflect a commitment to student success, an understanding of culturally responsive teaching, and knowledge of the teaching field. Meets professional standards for faculty in accordance with college policies and procedures.

About the Department

ACC offers an associate degree in Philosophy. The Philosophy, Religion, and Humanities department serves students across the region. Courses cover questions spanning from reality, truth, and morality to freedom, identity, and justice.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties

• Prepare and teach courses in Philosophy to a multicultural student population based on department learning outcomes, utilizing instructional strategies appropriate to community college students and the discipline.
• Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
• Provide teaching and mentoring that does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.
• Remain current in the field through professional development activities.
• Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department chair, dean, or executive leadership.

Technology

• Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, and other classroom technologies.
• Demonstrated proficiency with an online learning management system (such as Blackboard) to develop course content and perform administrative duties (posting office hours, syllabi, etc.).

Principal Professional Standards

• Meet deadlines for attendance certification and submission of final course grades.
• Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve retention and success.
• Demonstrate civility and collegiality in all interactions.
• Comply with published college policies and procedures and meet professional standards for teaching in a community college.
• Appropriate use of the college's learning management system.

Required Education

Educational requirements in accordance with SACSCOC accreditation standards.

• Master's degree in Philosophy; or
• Master's degree with at least 18 graduate hours in Philosophy

No substitution for educational requirements.

Working Conditions

• Work is routinely performed in a classroom or laboratory setting.
