Job Summary
Samuel Merritt University College of Nursing (CoN) is seeking adjunct faculty for Theory and PMHNP Clinical Seminar positions at the Oakland campus. The role is designed for advanced practice nurses with expertise in psychiatric mental health nursing across the lifespan.
Responsibilities
- Creates a dynamic, adult learner‑centered environment that supports the diverse learning needs of the student population and that is based on educational theory and evidence‑based teaching practices.
- Models reflective and critical thinking and serves as a coach and mentor for students; confers with them on their progress and assists them in the development of learning plans to facilitate successful achievement of course objectives.
- Meets with lead program faculty as needed to review the course, student evaluations, and recommendations for change (Theory).
- Meets with preceptor faculty prior to the first day of clinical to review clinical and course requirements (Clinical).
- Completes an appropriate course orientation (Theory).
- Completes an appropriate clinical evaluation of the site/s, where the faculty member will be overseeing students during PMHNP Clinical Seminars; maintains and enhances competence in the clinical area of teaching (PMHNP Clinical Seminar).
- Participates in on‑campus (Oakland), 1‑day intensive simulation per semester scheduled, and OSCE online simulation during PMHNP Clinical Seminar (Simulation).
- Plans learning experiences appropriate for the level of the students.
- Reviews written assignments and provides timely written feedback; documents student progress on appropriate forms and, if necessary, provides a learning plan for the attainment of objectives.
- Evaluates learner performance and provides ongoing feedback on attainment of course objectives.
- Applies students’ progress in the course at the mid‑term point, as defined in the syllabus; for those not meeting expectations, establishes a mutual learning plan to achieve stated goals (Theory).
- Completes a formal, written midterm and final evaluation on a designated form for each student (PMHNP Clinical Seminar).
- Submits grades to the Registrar by the appointed date in the Academic Calendar (Theory).
- Submits students’ final preceptor clinical evaluations for filing to the Program administrative assistant (PMHNP Clinical Seminar).
- Notifies the Program Director of at‑risk students as soon as identified and at least weekly thereafter (Theory).
- Notifies course lead of at‑risk students or unusual occurrences in the clinical setting as soon as identified and at least weekly thereafter (PMHNP Clinical Seminar).
- Participates in program faculty meetings as needed (Theory).
- Participates in faculty course meetings during the semester (PMHNP Clinical Seminar).
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Nursing required.
- PMHNP ANCC board certification.
- Demonstrated current competence in theory or clinical area.
- Effective leadership and communication skills.
- Past experience in theory or clinical teaching preferred.
- Unencumbered RN license or license eligible in California.
Employment & Compensation
Employee status: Fixed Term, Exempt. Time type: Part time. Pay: Based on teaching assignment, a reasonable estimate for this position is between $600 and $8,000.
