If you possess a recognized state license or certification in addiction counseling and value practice autonomy, schedule flexibility, and direct client connection, Mentalzon.com offers the ideal environment to grow your independent practice with us.

We provide the platform and client reach, enabling you to focus your energy on delivering impactful addiction counseling and supporting meaningful change.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Remote Addiction Counseling: Conduct thorough addiction assessments (knowledge of ASAM criteria preferred), create collaborative, individualized treatment plans, and deliver individual counseling focused on addiction, recovery dynamics, and related issues (within scope) using secure, HIPAA-compliant video technology.
  • Relapse Prevention & Skill Development: Guide clients in developing and implementing effective relapse prevention strategies; teach essential coping skills for managing triggers, stress, and cravings.
  • Psychoeducation: Provide education to clients (and families where appropriate and consented) on addiction as a disease, the recovery process, treatment modalities, and community-based support systems.
  • Clinical Documentation: Maintain precise, timely, and confidential client records adhering strictly to HIPAA, federal confidentiality regulations specific to substance use (42 CFR Part 2), state requirements, and professional ethical standards.
  • Ethical & Legal Compliance: Practice with unwavering adherence to the NAADAC (National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors) Code of Ethics, applicable state licensing/certification board regulations, 42 CFR Part 2 confidentiality rules, and all relevant laws.
  • Client Communication: Foster a supportive therapeutic alliance through clear, empathetic, and professional communication regarding treatment goals, progress, and expectations.
  • Direct Fee Management: Set your professional fees for counseling services and manage the billing and payment process directly with your clients.
Requirements:
  • Education & Training: Possess the minimum education level (e.g., Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's degree) and specialized addiction studies coursework/training required by your state to obtain and maintain the necessary professional credential (see below).
  • Licensure/Certification: Must hold a current, active state-issued license or certification specifically authorizing the practice of addiction/substance abuse counseling (e.g., LADC, LCDC, CADC-II/III, MAC, or equivalent state credential). Your credential must permit practice via telehealth according to your state's laws and regulations. You must operate within your defined scope of practice.
  • Experience: Verifiable post-credentialing experience providing direct addiction counseling services. Experience with evidence-based treatment modalities (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, CBT, Matrix Model) is highly valued.
  • Telehealth Competency: Proficiency in using HIPAA-compliant video conferencing software and electronic documentation systems. Awareness of best practices and ethical considerations for providing addiction counseling remotely.
  • Legal & Ethical Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2 (stringent confidentiality for addiction treatment records), state laws governing addiction counselors and telehealth, and the NAADAC Code of Ethics.
  • Professional Liability Insurance: Maintain active professional liability (malpractice) insurance that covers your scope of practice as an addiction counselor.
  • Skills:
    • Proficient addiction-specific assessment and treatment planning abilities.
    • Strong individual counseling skills tailored to addiction recovery.
    • Solid knowledge base of addiction models, recovery pathways, and relapse prevention.
    • Excellent interpersonal communication, active listening, and empathy.
    • Cultural sensitivity and competence.
    • Dependability, strong organizational skills, and firm ethical boundaries.
    • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development within the addiction field.
Conditions of Collaboration:
  • Work Your Way: Total flexibility to set your own work hours and schedule – choose full-time, part-time, or supplementary availability (e.g., 3-20+ hours weekly).
