Job summary

Northstar Behavioral Health Network is seeking a qualified Alcohol and Drug Counselor to join our team in Minnesota. The role focuses on assessing and treating clients with opioid, stimulant, and co-occurring disorders within our comprehensive care framework.

Responsibilities include conducting assessments, documenting progress, and coordinating with external agencies. A Bachelor’s degree and state qualification under MN 245G.11, subd 5 are required, along with at least one year of counseling

Qualifications

  • Alcohol and drug counseling licensure or qualification under MN statute 245G.11 subd 5.
  • Bachelor degree required.
  • 1+ year of chemical dependency counseling experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive assessments for clients admitted or referred.
  • Document services in weekly/individual notes per NBH policies.
  • Prepare information notes and maintain accurate case records.
  • Document activity notes and important information.
  • Complete assessments following NBH procedures and governing standards.
  • Coordinate with court and other referral sources as needed.
  • Share information based on assessment outcomes with outside agencies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of co-occurring disorders and apply skills in treatment.
  • Participate in continuing education to improve practice.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Duties
  • Provide Comprehensive Assessments for clients being admitted and/or providing
  • Comprehensive Assessments prior to admission for people placed with NBH by a Placing Authority.
  • Document services provided in a weekly note, individual note, and/or information note.
  • Documentation will be completed according to NBH policies and procedures and standards established by governing bodies.
  • Document case activity notes and important information.
  • Complete and document assessments in accordance with NBH policies and procedures and standards established by governing bodies.
  • Provide court, Department of Corrections, and other referral sources with information based on the outcome of assessments completed
  • Work cooperatively with outside agencies.
  • Exhibits knowledge of core competencies in relation to working with co-occurring disorders through continuing education and implementing skills into all aspects of treatment.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned by the assigned supervisor.
Requirements
  • Must be qualified as an alcohol and drug counselor according to MN Statute 245G.11 subd 5.
  • Bachelor degree.
  • Must have 1 or more years providing chemical dependency counseling (supervised internship applies).
  • CPR Certification or attain within 30 days.
  • Must understand and follow NBH's Drug and Alcohol Policy.
  • Must pass a State of Minnesota Background Check.
  • Must possess a current Minnesota Driver’s License with acceptable driving record Ability to use Microsoft Office programs and other computer skills.
