Role Description

The Adaptive Skills Trainer is a part-time, on-site role based in Sonoma County, CA. In this position, the trainer supports regional center clients with intellectual/developmental disabilities in developing practical life and adaptive skills that promote independence at home, in school, and in the community. Day-to-day responsibilities include assessing skill needs, implementing individualized training plans, and providing direct instruction in areas such as communication, daily living, social skills, and executive functioning. The role involves collaborating with families, caregivers, and other professionals, documenting progress, and adjusting strategies based on observed outcomes and feedback. The trainer also participates in team meetings, follows evidence-based practices and organizational procedures, and maintains a supportive, respectful environment for all participants. Adaptive Skills Trainers have the opportunity to become sexual educators with our clients if they would like to expand their role and caseload.

Full-time positions become available over time at SOAR. All part-time job opportunities are eligible to become full-time for compatible staff who would like larger caseloads and can build them gradually. Hours requests are taken into consideration and every effort will be made to accommodate them.

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Special Education, Applied Behavior Analysis, Community Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or related field
  • Minimum 1 yrs. experience with people with I/DD
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1 year instructional experience
  • Experience facilitating groups
  • Candidates should possess Life Skills expertise, including coaching in daily living, social, and community participation skills to promote independence.
  • Candidates should possess excellent Communication and Soft Skills to build rapport, manage sensitive situations, and collaborate with families and team members.
  • Ability to work on-site in Sonoma County, CA; maintain clear documentation; follow ethical and professional standards; and pass any required background checks or screenings.
