Job summary

The Ionia County Intermediate School District is seeking an Adaptive Physical Education Teacher to provide high quality, specially designed instruction for students with disabilities, including ASD and cognitive impairments, at Freedom Acres and other ISD sites.

The role emphasizes planning activities that meet individual needs in the least restrictive environment, collaboration with general education teams, and meaningful involvement of families and community partners.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid Michigan teaching certificate with SP and MX/MB endorsements.
  • Meet requirements for adaptive physical education under MI AR for SPED (R.340.1797).
  • Strong knowledge of IEP development related to Adaptive PE.
  • Interpersonal skills to foster positive relationships with students, families, staff and the community.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality, specially designed adaptive physical education for students with disabilities (ASD, SCI, SEI, moderately cognitive impairments).
  • Plan classroom-based recreational activities considering individual needs, LRE, and community resources.
  • Engage general education students in planned activities and coordinate with school staff.

Salary Range: $50,133 - $94,040; based on the IIEA Master Agreement

Affiliation: Ionia Intermediate Education Association (IIEA)

Reports To: Freedom Acres Principal

About The Role

To provide high quality, specially designed instruction of organized adaptive physical education for students with disabilities. This role will focus on students with ASD, SCI, SEI and moderately cognitive impairments at Freedom Acres as well as other ISD operated programs in other locations. The right candidate will plan recreational activities on a classroom basis that take into account individual needs and capabilities of the student, LRE considerations, community resources, carry-over potential outside the school setting and involvement of general education students in planned activities.

Qualifications Desired
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with SP (Physical Education for Students with Disabilities) and MX or MB (Physical Education) endorsements
  • Must meet the requirements for teachers of students requiring adaptive physical education under the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (R. 340.1797)
  • Competency in the content area of service as well as knowledge of IEP development related to the area of Adaptive PE
  • Interpersonal skills which promote positive personal relationships with students, parents, staff and community is required
