Job summary

University of Arizona Department of Physics is seeking an Adaptive Optics Associate for the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory in Tucson. The role covers nighttime AO operations and technician-level support for maintenance and enhancement of AO systems.

The incumbent will grow into a technical expert on LBTO AO systems and help integrate them into observatory operations, with opportunities to participate in ongoing AO projects and system upgrades.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Optics, Physics, Engineering, or related field; or equivalent experience.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to the remote observatory site.

Responsibilities

• Operate AO equipment for night-time observations with guidance from senior personnel.
• Perform routine setup and checkout of AO systems to prepare for daytime and nighttime activities.
• Provide technician-level support in diagnosing performance issues in AO equipment and assist with on-site hardware per supervisor instructions.
• Contribute to operational documentation to improve AO system performance.
• Assist in the design and implementation of new AO equipment as directed by supervision.
