Adaptive and Functional Special Education Teachers (SPED) Middle School 2025-2026

Reports To: Director of Special Education

Position Purpose

Provide direct instructional services for students with exceptional needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education (or related to the subject taught) with appropriate Kansas licensure in Special Education
  • Multiple positions available.

Physical/Emotional Requirements: The incumbent may be required to use the following skills and abilities during any part of the working day: speaking, hearing, visual reading, writing, word processing, mobility, consistency of temperament, ability to work with a variety of problems at the same time, stamina for working long hours and in stress-producing environments.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Assist the Individualized Education Planning Team in designing an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for students with exceptional needs.
  • Provide direct instruction and services for pupils whose needs are identified in a written IEP. Monitor the IEP of each student placed in the special education class and consult with parents and the IEP team about changes.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to students' maturity and interests.
  • Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects, communicating these objectives to students.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media suited to students' needs and physical limitations.
  • Implement district's educational philosophy, goals, and objectives through instruction and action.
  • Assess student progress regularly, seeking district specialist assistance as needed.
  • Help implement policies and rules governing students and the classroom, maintaining order fairly and justly.
  • Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes at mutually agreeable times.
  • Maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Complete all special education paperwork, including IEPs and Medicaid billing.

Terms of Employment

Salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated per Board policy on certification personnel.

Additional Notes
