PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Functions as part of the Inpatient Services Hemodialysis Health Care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for assigned patients in accordance with FMCNA policies, procedures, and training, and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides patient care under the direct supervision of Hemodialysis Registered Nurse for assigned patient(s) in the dialysis suite in the acute setting; excluding Intensive Care Units.
  • Reports and documents all incidents, complaints, or problems to the RN.
  • Supports a safe, clean working environment and participates in quality improvement activities.
  • May set up and prime equipment for renal therapies with documented competency.
  • Ensures dialysis machine safety and proper setup according to manufacturer instructions and policies.
  • Welcomes patients, checks on their well-being, and reports any issues to the RN.
  • Obtains pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight, reports unusual findings.
  • Assists with cannulation and reports difficulties to the RN.
  • Accurately documents treatment information in patient records and electronic systems.
  • Calculates and inputs dialysis machine settings as prescribed.
  • Ensures safety alarms are enabled and functional.
  • Collects and labels specimens for laboratory delivery.
  • Evaluates intradialytic problems, provides interventions, and monitors patient response.
  • Prepares for treatment discontinuation, obtains vital signs, and documents accordingly.
  • Assists with venous access termination, applies dressings, and evaluates patients prior to discharge.
  • Complies with all relevant policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Supports various projects as assigned and performs other duties as needed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Includes computer work, patient interaction, and facility staff collaboration.
  • Requires travel between facilities and within the community.
  • Work environment is a healthcare setting with potential exposure to infectious materials.
  • Involves heavy lifting, moving patients, and assisting with equipment.
  • Requires standing, bending, and occasional lifting of up to 200 lbs with assistance.

Education:
  • High School Diploma required
Experience and Skills:
  • No experience required; 6 months preferred in related fields.
  • Must obtain CCHT within 18 months of hire.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Employees must take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test; accommodations considered if needed.
