Purpose and Scope:
The Inpatient RN provides direct patient care in accordance with company policies, procedures, FMCNA compliance programs, and contracted hospitals' policies. Practice areas include, but are not limited to, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, apheresis, and ultrafiltration. The RN partners with hospitals to deliver quality care and ensure a positive patient experience.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform a broad range of tasks including direct patient care in multiple modalities such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, CRRT, and Apheresis, under limited supervision.
- Supervise and direct Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff; provide education to ICU staff for CRRT.
- Manage direct patient care in the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services, administering appropriate treatments as prescribed.
- Assess patient responses to treatments, make adjustments, and communicate concerns to physicians and management.
- Deliver safe, effective, timely, and efficient care.
- Provide organized shift reports; manage patient schedules considering lab results, MD orders, and patient assessments.
- Implement, monitor, and document patient responses to intradialytic transfusions, reporting adverse reactions appropriately.
- Collaborate with healthcare team members to coordinate patient care and ensure continuity.
- Communicate effectively with hospital staff and document all treatment information accurately.
- Maintain cleanliness and disinfect equipment and surrounding areas per policies.
- Prepare for dialysis treatments, perform necessary tests, and operate equipment safely.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and staff meetings; assist in training and orientation.
- Act as a subject matter expert for dialysis-related complications.
- Report incidents, complaints, or problems per protocol; may provide in-center patient care as needed.
- Adhere to company policies, legal requirements, and participate in various projects.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Work involves direct patient interaction, travel between facilities, on-call rotations, and exposure to infectious materials.
- Heavy lifting and handling of equipment and solutions are required.
Supervision:
Provides supervision to Patient Care Technicians (CCHT) and clerical staff; educates ICU staff for CRRT.
Education:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Current state licensure.
- Maintains knowledge in nephrology and inpatient care advancements.
- Certification in Nephrology Nursing or Apheresis Nursing is encouraged.
Experience and Skills:
- At least 1 year RN experience and specific nephrology experience as detailed.
- Strong assessment skills, leadership ability, and ongoing education commitment.
