A Brief Overview
Perioperative nursing is a specialty within the nursing profession that encompasses the care of individuals across the life span who are undergoing a surgical procedure or procedure requiring anesthesia. Perioperative nursing incorporates the pre-procedure care, intra operative and acute post-operative care. The Perioperative nurse will use a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Perioperative nursing can range from routine, elective procedures to highly complex procedures to trauma. Perioperative nurses have adapted nursing process to include strict adherence to the surgical safety checklists, sterility, surgical counts and post-operative airway, pain and nausea management. Perioperative nurses will educate patients about post-operative care management and provide same day discharge instructions.
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree Bachelors of Science: Nursing (BSN) Preferred

Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Nurse - KSBN A multistate license with the ability to practice within the State of Kansas is also accepted. Required
- Basic Life Support - BLS RQI, CPR or ACLS certifications may be required in lieu of or in addition to BLS depending on department. Must have within 90 days of hire.

- Collects pertinent data and information relative to the patient, situation, or setting.
- Analyzes assessment data to determine actual or potential problems, and issues.
- Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or situation.
- Develops a collaborative plan encompassing strategies to achieve expected outcomes.
- Implements identified plan through coordination of care and employs strategies to promote health and wellness.
- Evaluates progress toward attainment of goals and outcomes.
- Assesses and provides appropriate interventions for airway, pain and nausea management
- Educates patient on post operative discharge instructions
- Delivers professional nursing care guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring illustrated by creating caring relationships, taking time to have uninterrupted moments with patients and displaying unconditional acceptance and respect.
