Job Description
Position Overview: The Activity Therapist III (SR) with supervisory responsibility (TR) plays a critical role in enhancing the overall well-being of residents by planning, coordinating, and overseeing therapeutic programs and activities. This position works closely with the Director of Therapeutic Recreation/Public Relations Marketing to implement and manage recreation services designed to meet residents' cognitive, emotional, physical, and social needs. The Activity Therapist III (SR) ensures that all activities promote independence, improve quality of life, and provide meaningful engagement for residents.
In addition to managing daily operations, the Activity Therapist III (SR) supervises and supports a team of recreation therapists, aides, and volunteers. This role involves collaborating with other departments, such as nursing, rehabilitation, and social services, to deliver holistic care and improve resident outcomes. The Activity Therapist III (SR) is also responsible for maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, managing budgets, approving purchase orders, and ensuring the efficient use of resources.
The Activity Therapist III (SR) plays an integral part in creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for residents and staff alike. The role requires strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills to engage with residents while focusing on enhancing resident care through creative, individualized, and group programming. The Activity Therapist III (SR) contributes to the overall success of the Therapeutic Recreation Department and overall mission in providing high-quality care to our residents.
The Activity Therapist III (SR) is a pivotal leadership role that requires a passion for improving resident well-being, a strong ability to manage operations, and a commitment to fostering a positive, engaging environment for staff and residents.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Director in assessing, planning, and coordinating the overall functioning of the Therapeutic Recreation Services.
- Assist the Director in developing and implementing Policies & Procedures to assure compliance with regulatory agencies: NYSDOH.
- To aid in recruiting, supervising, evaluating, and disciplining Managers and Therapeutic Recreation personnel, as needed.
- Provides clinical supervision to staff and program development.
- Attend committee/interdisciplinary/resident-oriented meetings as assigned to represent the Department.
- Conducted staff meetings and in-services as needed every week. In the absence of the Director, Managerial Staff meetings may be conducted.
- Review facility-wide therapeutic recreation calendars, reviewing programming and recommending operational changes, if warranted, to meet the needs of the patient/resident population.
- Can be assigned to generate or complete reports or send memos to Administration, as needed.
- Reviews staffing patterns, program evaluation, patient/resident satisfaction surveys, and clinical documentation for problem areas and recommends changes to the Director.
- Initiates, monitors, and evaluates the Performance Improvement program for the Department.
- Assists the Department staff in ordering and maintaining supplies or materials necessary for appropriate activity programming.
- Assist the Director in seeking out new and innovative programs or resources applicable to the facility population and work closely with the Director in the implementation process.
- Assist the Director in assuring that all documentation and records, such as monthly schedules, daily attendance, unit programs, initial assessments, progress notes, statistics, etc., are maintained promptly.
- Works closely with the Director in developing and implementing an appropriate budget, assisting in adjusting and modifying it to address the changing needs of the Department, Facility, and Health and Hospital system.
- In the absence of the Director, the Assistant may function in that capacity, representing Therapeutic Recreation.
- Assist the director in implementing initiatives related to patient experience, resident satisfaction, etc.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate therapeutic recreation programs for residents.
- Supervise, train, and support recreation therapy staff and volunteers.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure holistic care for residents.
- Monitor and manage departmental budgets, purchase orders, and resource allocation.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory and quality standards in TR services.
- Plan and organize events, activities, and outings for residents, fostering socialization and engagement.
- Advocate for resident needs and preferences, promoting person-centered care.
- Maintain documentation of resident participation, progress, and therapeutic goals.
Minimum Qualifications
Assignment Level I
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college including or supplemented by 18 credits in recreation, physical education, dance, fine arts, applied arts (including therapy) and 12 credits in psychology, social psychology, group work, group dynamics and/or related field; or
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and one year of full-time experience in planning, coordinating and supervising a recreation activities program in a hospital, health care or related facility; or
- A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However, all candidates must possess a baccalaureate degree.
Assignment Level II
In addition to meeting the requirements for Assignment Level I, Assignment Level II requires:
- One year of full-time experience as described in two (2) above.
Assignment Level III
In addition to meeting the requirements for Assignment Levels I, Assignment Level III requires:
- Three years of full-time experience as described in two (2) above.
