Job summary

Grand Street Settlement is seeking an Activity Specialist for Saturday Night Lights to promote growth, leadership and a positive self-image among middle and high school youths. The coach will supervise, develop and facilitate curriculum and activities including sportsmanship, workouts, drills, tournaments and other sporting events.

The role requires a High School Diploma (some college preferred) and at least 1 year of youth development experience.

Qualifications

• Requires high school diploma; some college preferred.
• Minimum 1 year of youth development experience with lesson planning and classroom management.
• CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred and in date.
• Ability to build rapport and foster a positive, inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide 4 hours of structured basketball training for middle and high school youths.
• Create a culture of positive group cohesiveness and problem-solve with youth.
• Supervise groups, ensure a safe and professional environment.
• Design and implement curriculum and activities based on themes.
• Collaborate with staff and model professionalism for youth participants.
• Attend trainings and follow daily schedules and safety procedures.
• Maintain supplies for first aid and safety kits daily.
• Document incidents and communicate with supervisors/parents as required.
• Coordinate community relations efforts and assist with outreach events.
• Maintain accurate records of youth participation and progress.
• Supervise and evaluate youth workers and interns.
• Keep workspace clean and organized throughout the facility.

POSITION TITLE: Activity Specialist/Saturday Night Lights

DEPARTMENT: Youth Services

LOCATION(S): Rutgers Community Center; 200 Madison St., New York, NY 10002

REPORTS TO: Program Director/Assistant Director

SALARY: $20/hour

START DATE: November 2026

SCHEDULE: Saturdays 5pm - 9pm, Monday – Thursday 6pm - 10pm

JOB SUMMARY: An Activity Specialist/Saturday Night Lights will assist in promoting growth, leadership and positive self-image in all middle and/or high school youths at Grand Street Settlement. An SNL coach will also provide competent supervision, develop and facilitate curriculum/activities such as sportsmanship, workout and drills, tournaments and others sporting events.

Education, Experience, And Requirements

• High School Diploma required, some college or college degree preferred
• At least 1 year of youth development related experience that must include development of lesson plans, facilitation of classroom activities and classroom management.
• Valid CPR/AED and First Aid certification through recognized accrediting body preferred
• Ideal candidate must have the ability to build rapport with youths and create a positive, inclusive environment.

Pre-employment Requirements

• Candidate must successfully complete the following: NYSDOH Fingerprinting Screening, NYS Clearance Review Background Check, SEL, 3 Reference Checks, Physical w/updated TB test

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Provide 4 hours of structured basketball training and activities for Middle School youths and High School youth participants
• Create a culture of positive group cohesiveness and problem solve directly with youth in groups.
• Provide competent supervision of a group of children and participate in activities and trips; provide and maintain a safe and professional working environment.
• Design and implement curriculum and facilitate activities based on the given themes.
• Work collaboratively with co-workers and cultivate a culture of professionalism and act as a role model for youth participants.
• Come ready to work with a positive attitude and provide support and encouragement to youths.
• Attend professional developments and training as assigned by supervisors.
• Know and follow daily schedules, protocols and procedures, safety drills and safety plans.
• Maintain adequate supplies in first aid and safety kits on a daily basis.
• Responsible for documenting incidents and communicating incidents with supervisors and/or parents and guardians.
• Coordinate community relations efforts and participate in outreach activities.
• Assist in the planning, organization and execution of community events.
• Maintain accurate records of youth participation, progress and other relevant information.
• Supervise and evaluate youth workers, SYEP, WLG, Americorps and interns.
• Clean, organize and maintain workspace and shared spaces throughout the facility.
• Other assignments as required by the program director.
