Job summary

Henry Street Settlement seeks an Activity Specialist for After School Clubs at the Lower East Side campus. The role supports Community Schools after-school programs with sessions from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, totaling about 12 hours per week.

You will assist in delivering engaging activities, manage student behavior, and help with snack distribution and dismissal. A High School Diploma is required; at least two years in after-school or camp settings is expected; conversational

• Minimum of two years’ experience in after-school or camp settings leading group activities.
• Strong knowledge of engaging activities for youth and positive youth development principles.
• Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds in school settings.
• Professionalism, flexibility, and ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Conversational Spanish is a plus.

Program Overview:

Education and Employment Services is an 8.2-million-dollar division serving about 9000 people each year through a continuum of services from Early Childhood Education through Adult Workforce programs designed to assist individuals in obtaining the skills necessary for lifetime self-sufficiency. Education Services include an Early Learn Program, After School Programs (7 sites), 6 Day Camps, Athletics, Community Schools, Expanded Horizons College Success Program, and our Youth Opportunity Hub. Programming takes place within 3 community center sites and multiple school-based programs. Employment Services include walk-in employment services, employment services for a public housing population, ESL job readiness training, and employment services for youth including SYEP and Young Adult Internship and Adult Literacy Programs.

Position Summary:

The Activity Specialist: After School Clubs will report to the Community School Director at P.S. 142. They will be responsible for providing support in our Community Schools After School Clubs. Responsibilities may include independently facilitating enrichment activities and/or supporting the lead facilitator in managing student behavior, resolving conflicts, and delivering engaging lessons. The Activity Specialist will also support program operations, including early pick-up, snack distribution and cleanup, and student dismissal. The program will operate from 2:30pm-4:30pm Monday-Friday.

Responsibilities

• Distribute snacks and ensure cleanup following snack time.
• Facilitate activities independently or support the lead facilitator in delivering engaging activities.
• Develop and facilitate opportunities for students to explore and build upon their skills and interests.
• Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive environment that supports student engagement and well-being.
• Complete and maintain attendance records and required program documentation.
• Support a safe, organized, and timely dismissal process.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

• High School Diploma required; enrollment in college in a related field preferred.
• Minimum of two (2) years' experience working in after-school or camp settings leading group activities.
• Strong content knowledge of engaging recreational and artistic activities for youth.
• Thorough knowledge of classroom management, behavior management, and positive youth development principles.
• Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds in school settings.
• Strong professionalism with the ability to take on multiple responsibilities, be flexible, and possess a positive team-oriented attitude.
• Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively under pressure.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Conversational Spanish skills is a plus.
