Job summary

Covington Behavioral Health Hospital is seeking an Activity Therapist to plan, direct, and implement activity therapy as part of patient treatment. This role focuses on creating engaging therapy programs and leading sessions to support mental and physical well-being, with emphasis on individualized care in an inpatient setting.

Responsibilities include assessments, program planning, and supervising staff where applicable.

Qualifications

• Two or more years of recreation experience in a healthcare setting.
• Experience creating activity programs aligned with treatment goals.
• Ability to plan and direct activity sessions for diverse patient groups.
• CPR and de-escalation/restraint training required or available upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Complete activity assessment through observation and interviews to inform the treatment plan.
• Plan, direct and implement activities within the program to facilitate patient progress.
• Plan and implement an activities program including therapeutic leisure skills and activities.
• Lead activity sessions to improve mental and physical well-being.
• Instruct patients in activities such as sports, dance, music, art or relaxation techniques.
• Develop and implement activity interventions that meet patient needs and goals.
• Plan and implement interventions to promote safe use of leisure time.
• Provide activity interventions to develop social skills and leisure independence.
• Modify activities to suit the needs of specific groups.
• Direct and supervise activity staff if applicable.
• Demonstrate empathy and address patient complaints with safety as a priority.
• Perform other functions as assigned.

Purpose Statement

Plan, direct and implement activity therapy programs as a component of the patient’s treatment plan.

Plan, direct and implement activity therapy programs as a component of the patient’s treatment plan. Covington Behavioral Health Hospital is a licensed 104-bed center that specializes in treating adult patients who have been experiencing acute changes in their emotional and mental well-being. Covington provides inpatient treatment to alleviate distress, provide stability, and improve each patient’s ability to live a productive and satisfying life.

Essential Functions

• Complete activity assessment through patient observation and patient/family interview, obtain information on the patient’s needs, skills, interests and limitations for the development and implementation of the treat plan.
• Plan, organize, direct and implement the activities within the treatment program to facilitate patient progress with treatment goals.
• Plan and implement an activities program including but not limited to therapeutic leisure skills and activities, leisure education and leisure awareness.
• Facilitate and lead activity sessions to improve patient mental and physical well-being.
• Instruct patients in activities and techniques, such are sports, dance, music, art or relaxation techniques designed to meet their specific needs.
• Develop treatment plans and implement activity interventions that meet patient needs and interests and help the patient achieve his/her treatment goals.
• Plan and implement activity interventions that promote a safe use of leisure time.
• Provide activity interventions to promote the development of social skills and leisure independence.
• Modify activities to suit the needs of specific groups.
• Direct and supervise activity staff in their implementation of the activity therapy program and services, if applicable.
• Demonstrate a positive, empathetic and professional attitude towards customers always. When patient needs are not met, acknowledge and work to resolve complaints. Recognize that patient safety is a top priority.

Education/Experience/Skill Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreational Therapy or related field required.
• Master’s degree preferred.
• Two or more years’ experience in recreation in a healthcare setting with knowledge of patient population served by the facility is required.

Licenses/Designations/Certifications

Can also be an art or music therapist.

• CPR and de-escalation/restraint certification required (training available upon hire and offered by facility).
• First aid may be required based on state or facility.
