KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assesses each resident for interests, talents, and previous patterns of time use, and develops activity plans of care based on that assessment.
  • Establishes and maintains necessary records regarding activities attendance and activities care plans. Develops an activity care plan with other functional care plans.
  • Identifies facility and community resources that can contribute to the activity care plan. Plans and schedules activities and develops a monthly calendar of activities.
  • Secures entertainment, program leaders, volunteers, materials, equipment, transportation, as necessary well in advance of scheduled dates.
  • Assures all residents are involved in activities; group, individual (bedside) and/or independent on a weekly basis.
  • Recruits and trains a volunteer activities staff and maintains volunteer programs which utilize community involvement.
  • Advises nursing, dietary, maintenance, volunteers, etc., of related responsibilities for an activity in advance as necessary
  • Evaluates effectiveness of programs in terms of resident outcomes.
  • Develops and maintains a budget for activities programs.
  • Coordinate’s facility newsletter and/or other promotion of activities programs through local media


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current, valid licensure as a qualified therapeutic recreation specialist, or eligibility for certification by a recognized accrediting body or,
  • 2 years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, one of which was full-time in a patient (resident) activities program in a health care setting or
  • Qualification as an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant, or
  • Completed a state-approved training course within 6 months of employment.
  • Related experience in skilled nursing
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills needed
  • Strong written and verbal skills required
  • Provide personal care to residents as needed for safety and comfort. Assist in the provision of restorative or rehabilitative care.
  • Performs restorative nursing tasks such as ambulation, range of motion, positioning, self-feeding, etc., within the scope of individuals training.
  • Contributes knowledge of resident’s conditions/needs to resident care plans.
  • Assist in the implementation of care plans as directed within the parameters of established policy and procedure.
  • Observes and reports on residents’ conditions and documents observations as required.
  • Must be able to perform moderate to heavy lifting
  • Comply with requirements of procedures for safe lifting and/or safe transfer of residents per established policies and procedures
  • Assist residents at mealtimes as necessary
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills needed.
