Job summary

XMS Solutions is seeking an Active Directory Server Migration Engineer in Washington, DC to lead complex migrations from strategy through execution. You will assess environments, design secure migration plans, and guide directory and server transitions with minimal disruption, leveraging Quest Migration Manager or similar tools.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
• 5+ years of enterprise infrastructure or related field experience.
• Advanced Windows Server and Active Directory expertise (domains, forests, trusts, GPO, DNS, DHCP, LDAP, authentication).
• 3+ years hands-on enterprise AD migrations experience.
• Experience with Quest Migration Manager or similar tool.

Responsibilities

• Lead AD domain and forest migrations, including consolidation and cross-domain transitions.
• Assess environments, map trusts, DNS, GPOs, applications, and dependencies.
• Migrate AD objects using Quest Migration Manager or equivalent.
• Plan migration sequencing, coexistence, trust relationships, and authentication continuity.
• Execute physical and virtual Windows Server migrations, plan capacity and compatibility.
• Migrate file shares, permissions, service accounts, and configurations; verify access.
• Develop runbooks, pilot plans, cutover schedules, validation checklists, and rollback procedures.
• Lead pilot migrations and production cutovers with cross-functional teams to minimize downtime.
• Validate directory health, DNS, authentication, and application connectivity post-migration.
• Document target configurations and retire legacy domains/servers after acceptance.

Role Overview

Join XMS Solutions as an Active Directory Server Migration Engineer and lead complex server and Microsoft Windows Active Directory migrations from strategy through execution. In this highly visible role, you will assess existing environments, identify improvement opportunities, and design secure, practical migration plans that support business continuity.

Using Quest Migration Manager or a comparable enterprise migration tool, you will guide directory and server transitions while minimizing disruption. You will partner with infrastructure, security, application, and operations teams to improve enterprise stability, security, and scalability and deliver reliable outcomes for users and business teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead Active Directory domain and forest migrations, including domain consolidation, restructuring, and cross-domain transitions.
• Assess source and target Active Directory and Windows Server environments, mapping trusts, DNS, Group Policy, applications, and service dependencies.
• Use Quest Migration Manager or a comparable enterprise tool to migrate users, groups, computer accounts, and other directory objects.
• Plan migration sequencing and domain coexistence, including trust relationships, name resolution, authentication, and access continuity.
• Plan and execute physical and virtual Windows Server migrations, addressing workloads, server roles, capacity, dependencies, and compatibility.
• Migrate file shares, permissions, service accounts, and server configurations; verify access and workload functionality in the target environment.
• Develop migration runbooks, pilot plans, cutover schedules, validation checklists, and rollback procedures for directory and server moves.
• Lead pilot migrations and production cutovers, coordinating infrastructure, security, application, and operations teams to minimize downtime and business disruption.
• Validate directory health, Group Policy, DNS, authentication, application connectivity, and server performance; resolve migration issues and provide post-migration support.
• Document target configurations, train support teams, and coordinate retirement of legacy domains and servers after migration acceptance.

Skills & Experience

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• At least five years of experience in enterprise infrastructure engineering, systems architecture, or a related field.
• Advanced Windows Server and Active Directory expertise, including domains, forests, trusts, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, LDAP, and authentication services.
• At least three years of hands-on experience planning and executing enterprise Active Directory migrations.
• Hands-on experience using Quest Migration Manager or a comparable enterprise migration tool to migrate Active Directory objects and related resources.
• Experience assessing Windows Server environments, performing capacity planning, optimizing performance, and supporting physical and virtual server infrastructure.
• Working knowledge of VMware vSphere and/or Microsoft Hyper-V, plus familiarity with Linux server environments.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to evaluate complex environments and develop practical solutions.
• Strong technical documentation and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
• Ability to lead cross-functional infrastructure initiatives and build effective partnerships across IT teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Active Directory consolidation, forest migrations, directory modernization, Microsoft Entra ID, and hybrid identity environments.
• Knowledge of dependency analysis, disaster recovery, business continuity, identity security, access controls, and infrastructure hardening.
• Experience developing migration standards, repeatable processes, and operational best practices.
• Relevant Microsoft, VMware, or infrastructure architecture certifications.
