Job summary

Fluidstack is seeking an acoustics-focused engineer to own environmental and occupational noise studies for its gigawatt-scale data centers. You will model sites, specify effective noise mitigations, and collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and architectural teams to ensure compliance.

You will lead noise measurements, evaluate barriers and enclosures, and support permitting with robust assessments and reports. A strong background in outdoor propagation and standards is required.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of acoustics or noise control engineering on industrial, power generation, or mission-critical facilities.
  • Fluency with outdoor sound propagation tools (CadnaA/SoundPLAN) and ISO 9613-2.
  • Experience with environmental noise measurement, sound power/pressure data, and octave-band calculations.
  • Knowledge of occupational noise standards (e.g., OSHA 1910.95) and local industrial noise rules.
  • Experience specifying barriers, silencers, acoustic enclosures, and related equipment.
  • Ability to explain acoustic trade-offs to ME/EE engineers and defend limits in design reviews.
  • Bonus: INCE PE license or related certifications; data center or gas turbine noise experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own the acoustic studies. Run environmental and occupational noise studies and updates for templates and designs.
  • Model the sites with outdoor sound propagation models and adapt to candidate sites and terrain.
  • Recommend mitigations: barriers, silencers, acoustic enclosures, louvers, and equipment selections to meet limits.
  • Work across mechanical, electrical, power generation, and architectural designs early and review layouts for acoustic impact.
  • Protect the workforce by setting occupational noise exposure limits and hearing conservation zones.
  • Support permitting by producing noise assessments, reports, and measurements.

Job description

About Fluidstack

We exist to make humanity more free. For most of human history, you farmed or you starved. Technology gave people more time for the things they wanted to do, instead of things they had to do. Powerful AI will be the biggest lever for human choice we’ve ever built - but only if models are aligned with what humanity actually wants. There are groups building AI who don’t share these goals. Whoever deploys frontier compute infrastructure fastest will decide whether AI expands human freedom or shrinks it.

We’re singularly focused on delivering 10 to 100s of GWs of compute faster than anyone else, rethinking every layer of the stack. We acquire power, design and build data centers, and operate them - with teams spanning hardware and software. Speed and scale are our key differentiators. Come be a part of building civilization-scale infrastructure for AI.

We hire people who care deeply about this problem space. If that is you, please apply!

How We Operate
  • Be a barrel. Full autonomy. Own things end to end, take on scope without being asked, no permission required to operate outside your core role.

  • Insane urgency. We drive everything forward as fast as possible.

  • Reason from first principles. Challenge every assumption. Zero analogy thinking, no egos, the best idea wins.

  • Love of the game. The frontier of AI is the most interesting problem of our time. We put in long hours at high intensity to push the frontier forward.

  • Build something that actually matters. If you’re going to spend your time, spend it on something that matters to the world.

The Civil, Structural and Architectural Team

You’ll join the civil, structural, and architectural engineers who design the buildings, sites, and yards for Fluidstack’s gigawatt-scale AI data centers. The team works from template designs that repeat across campuses, and every template carries large mechanical plant, on-site generation, and electrical yards whose sound has to be understood before the first site is permitted. This role is the team’s acoustics specialist and the point of contact for noise across the data center and power generation engineering groups.

Examples of key problems the team is working on

  • Predicting property-line and community noise from template data center designs with hundreds of fans, chillers, and dry coolers running at full load, before a site is chosen.

  • Quantifying the noise of on-site gas generation, transformers, and switchyards and folding it into the same site model.

  • Choosing mitigations that work as repeatable products, such as barriers, silencers, enclosures, and equipment selection, rather than site-by-site fixes.

  • Keeping occupied work areas inside and around the plant within occupational noise limits as equipment density rises.

Role Scope
  • Own the acoustic studies. Run environmental and occupational noise studies and calculations for the template data center and power generation designs, and keep them current as the templates change.

  • Model the sites. Build and maintain outdoor sound propagation models for each template and adapt them to candidate sites, terrain, and local ordinances.

  • Recommend the mitigations. Specify barriers, silencers, acoustic enclosures, louvers, and equipment selections that bring sites within limits, with the cost and schedule case for each.

  • Work across engineering. Bring noise requirements into the mechanical, electrical, power generation, and architectural designs early, and review their equipment selections and layouts for acoustic impact.

  • Protect the workforce. Set occupational noise exposure limits for plant and yard work areas, define hearing conservation zones, and verify them at commissioning.

  • Support permitting. Produce the noise assessments, reports, and measurements that permitting and community engagement need, and answer the questions that come back.

What We’re Looking For

The below is a starting point. We always make space for exceptional people, so if you don’t fit this role exactly,

  • 5+ years of acoustics or noise control engineering on industrial, power generation, or mission-critical facilities, with at least one project taken from study through permit and commissioning measurement.

  • Fluency in an outdoor sound propagation tool such as CadnaA or SoundPLAN and in the ISO 9613-2 method behind it.

  • Hands-on with environmental noise measurement, sound power and sound pressure data from equipment vendors, and octave-band calculations.

  • Working knowledge of occupational noise standards such as OSHA 1910.95 and the local noise ordinances that govern industrial sites.

  • You have specified barriers, silencers, and acoustic enclosures and seen them built and measured.

  • You explain acoustic trade-offs to mechanical and electrical engineers in their terms and hold the line on limits when a design review wants to spend them.

  • Bonus: INCE Board Certification or Professional Engineer license. Data center or gas turbine plant noise experience. Building acoustics or vibration isolation background. Mechanical engineering or procurement experience.

We are committed to pay equity and transparency.
