Job summary

The University of California - San Diego Medical Centers is seeking a Facility Manager to operate and ensure compliance of an ACL-3 high-containment facility. You will coordinate regulatory dealings, maintain safety documentation, and lead training and PPE programs.

Responsibilities include annual shutdown planning, equipment verification, and incident response coordination with EH&S and UC Police, while collaborating with dean-level stakeholders to expand the facility's containment capabilities.

Qualifications

• Doctorate in biological sciences, entomology, microbiology, or closely related field.
• Background in insect biology, biosafety science, or agricultural pest research preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of ACL-2/ACL-3 containment practices and federal regulatory frameworks.
• Experience managing safety documentation, permits, and audit preparation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication with diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to develop and implement safety manuals, SOPs, and training programs.
• Experience coordinating with EH&S, UC Police, IBC, and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

• Maintain continuous compliance with ACL-3 regulations and oversight.
• Serve as primary liaison with regulatory agencies for inspections and permits.
• Coordinate annual facility shutdowns and verify HVAC, biosafety cabinets, autoclaves.
• Align ACL-3 users to prevent resource conflicts and manage access.
• Develop and update safety manuals, SOPs, and biosafety training programs.
• Oversee ACL-3 PPE inventory and respiratory protection standards.
• Create emergency response plans for containment breaches and incidents.
