General Statement of Duties

The Sterile Processing Technician Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality Career and Technical Education (CTE) instruction aligned with Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Health Science curriculum frameworks. The instructor prepares high school students for careers in sterile processing and central service by providing instruction in sterilization, decontamination, microbiology, surgical instrumentation, infection control, and materials management. The role emphasizes hands-on learning, competency-based instruction, and clinical/work-based learning experiences that develop students' technical skills, workplace readiness, and eligibility for industry credentialing in sterile processing

Essential Duties

Daily Expectation:

• Deliver instruction aligned with VDOE and CTE Resource curriculum frameworks, focusing on:
• Sterilization, decontamination, and cleaning methodologies.
• Surgical instrumentation, materials management, and equipment preparation and safety.
• Apply principles of microbiology, infection control protocols, and OSHA-compliant safety standards.
• Facilitate student eligibility and readiness for industry credentialing exams.
• Reinforce aseptic techniques, infection control protocols, and OSHA-compliant safety standards.
• Coordinate and monitor student engagement in clinical and work-based learning, ensuring completion of required externship hours aligned with program standards.

Professional Expectations

• Demonstrate current knowledge of sterile processing practices, including:
• Decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of medical instruments.
• Maintain industry relevance through ongoing professional development, certification renewal, and engagement with healthcare partners.
• Promote student leadership development through CTSO participation (e.g., HOSA) and career exploration activities.
• Collaborate with CTE administrators, healthcare partners, and advisory boards to ensure program quality and workforce alignment.
• Uphold professional standards in safety, instruction, communication, and equitable student support.
• Model workplace readiness skills, including teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and professionalism.

Essential Duties (Standard)

• Develop and deliver daily lesson plans aligned with state and district standards.
• Use a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
• Implement differentiated instruction, accommodations, and modifications to support all learners.
• Integrate technology and innovative practices into teaching to enhance student engagement.
• Establish and maintain clear expectations for behavior and learning.
• Create a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
• Manage classroom routines to ensure safety, orderliness, and instructional time
• Design formative and summative assessments to measure student learning.
• Analyze data to monitor progress, adjust instruction, and support student achievement.
• Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and parents.
• Communicate regularly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.
• Participate in department meetings, team planning, and school initiatives.
• Collaborate with special education staff, counselors, and support personnel as needed.
• Attend work daily and fulfill all assigned responsibilities.
• Participate in ongoing professional development to refine instructional practice.
• Maintain accurate records, including grades, attendance, and required
• documentation.
• Uphold all school and district policies, including professional and ethical standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Information

• This is a 11-month (239-day) position with a contractual start date of July 30, 2026.
• Salary will be prorated based on the official start date.
• Candidates selected for interviews will be contacted by the school program.

Minimum Requirements

• Possess or maintain eligibility for a Virginia Technical Professional License with the appropriate Health Occupations or Career and Technical Education (CTE) endorsement.
• Maintain current industry-recognized certification in surgical technology (e.g., CST) as required for CTE instructional licensure.
• Verify completion of an accredited surgical technology program.
• Demonstrate a minimum of two (2) years of successful, recent clinical expertise in surgical technology; experience in hospital or outpatient surgical settings is highly preferred.
• Demonstrate professional proficiency and comprehensive knowledge in surgical procedures and standardized operating room protocols.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
