Job summary

Southern Power in Atlanta, GA seeks an Accounting Team Leader to guide a small accounting team through monthly closes, payroll support, and gas facility accounting, while ensuring GAAP, FERC, and Sarbanes‑Oxley compliance. You will lead journal entries, reconciliations, and analysis, contribute to SEC reporting, and drive process improvements.

A Bachelor’s degree in accounting and 5+ years of experience are required; CPA is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of two to three people in the monthly closing of financial records using Oracle Cloud.
• Oversee and review monthly journal entries, analysis of financial transactions and results, account reconciliations, and other accounting duties as required.
• Ensure compliance with all Sarbanes‑Oxley regulations, including compilation of control evidence and review/approval of direct reports’ internal controls.
• Assist in the preparation and review of accounting information that supports or may be included in monthly management reporting.
• Assist in the preparation and review of accounting information that supports or may be included in Southern Power’s 10-Q or 10-K.
• Assist with financial audits of Southern Power and its subsidiaries.
• Promote innovation and create workflow efficiencies in a dynamic environment.
• Focus on people development by providing motivation, continuous training, coaching, and performance management for direct reports.

Job description

The Accounting Team Leader position is responsible for leading a team of accountants who perform financial accounting activities for Southern Power Company, an SEC registrant. This position will oversee various income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow accounting functions, while ensuring that financial records are maintained in accordance with GAAP, FERC, and Sarbanes‑Oxley requirements. This role will primarily focus on supporting the payroll accounting function, as well as the accounting activities for our various gas facilities. In addition, the position will support Southern Power's SEC reporting requirements and manage key internal control processes across the Comptroller's organization.

This is a hybrid position based in Atlanta, Georgia, requiring employees to work in the office four days per week.

Job Requirements

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting (or related field) is required.
• Advanced degree is a plus.
• CPA license (or equivalent) is preferred.

Experience, Knowledge, And Skills

• 5 or more years of experience in accounting or related fields is required.
• Proficiency in applying GAAP and accounting principles is required.
• Experience with and a strong understanding of month‑end close, journal entries and account reconciliations is required.
• Experience with and strong understanding of analysis of financial transactions, financial statements, and internal controls is preferred.
• Experience with the Oracle Cloud is preferred.
• Working knowledge of the utility industry and the FERC chart of accounts is a plus.
• Experience in coaching and mentoring others is a plus.
