  • Support Workers’ Compensation, retirement, tax adjustments, VLTP activities.
  • Financial reporting: reconcile GL accounts and prepare journal vouchers.
  • Travel management: audit and process travel vouchers and related invoices.
  • Commercial accounts: process invoices and track status; coordinate with procurement.
  • Government card programs: support billing data reconciliation and user assistance.
  • Perform other duties to support finance operations.

Summary

The Accounting Clerk III provides essential financial, accounting, and administrative support to the CBP Office of Finance. This role is responsible for a wide range of tasks across payroll, financial reporting, travel, commercial accounts, government card programs, revenue collections, and customer service. The Accounting Clerk III ensures accuracy, compliance, and timely processing of financial transactions in support of CBP’s mission.

ESSENTIAL responsibilities
  • Payroll Support: Audit and reconcile employee leave balances and pay records. Research and resolve pay discrepancies, process union dues, garnishments, and separation debts.
  • Respond to employee inquiries, manage pay-related tickets, and process onboarding documents.
  • Support Workers’ Compensation, retirement, tax adjustments, and Voluntary Leave Transfer Program (VLTP) activities.
  • Financial Reporting & Analysis: Reconcile assigned General Ledger (GL) accounts and prepare journal vouchers. Assist in preparing accounting and financial reports and responding to audit requests.
  • Travel Management: Audit and process travel vouchers for temporary duty and permanent change of station (PCS). Manage relocation program invoices and respond to travel-related inquiries.
  • Commercial Accounts: Process vendor and utility invoices, track invoice status, and manage daily deposits to the Treasury. Input payment schedules and coordinate with procurement and contracting officers.
  • Government Card Programs: Support credit card program operations, reconcile billing data, and provide user assistance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of finance operations.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • High school diploma or GED and at least two years of post-high school education in business, management, finance, or accounting or related field OR completion of a four-year program at an accredited college or university in any field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Teams, Word, Outlook, Access and use of multiple monitors.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial processing.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Must be able to successfully complete the required U.S. Government background investigation and security clearance process. The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain the security clearance required for the position as a condition of employment and continued employment.
OTHER ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Computer Skills:Proficiency with computers and ability to navigate/enter information into established databases and Microsoft Office products.

Language:Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Communication:Ability to communicate effectively in writing and in person as appropriate for the needs of the audience.

Customer Service: Ability to address all customer inquiries with a pleasant and patient demeanor.

Math Ability:Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret information. Ability to choose the right mathematical methods or formulas to solve a problem.

Reasoning Ability:Ability to collect data, define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions dealing with several abstract and concrete variables.

Work Environment:When on site, work is performed in an office cubicle environment with low noise level.

Physical Demands: Employee will have consistent and direct visual contact with multiple computer monitors.

Other Demands:

  • Accounting Clerk III positions are subject to the Service Contract Act.
  • Must comply with all CBP security, training, and onboarding requirements.
  • Professional demeanor and adherence to CBP’s standards of conduct
  • May be required to work overtime during peak periods and perform mission-essential functions during government furloughs or shutdowns.

This position may be fully remote. Employees must reside within a 50-mile radius of the designated CBP office and must be able to report onsite when required to support business or contract requirements.
