Job summary

The State of Maine is seeking an Unemployment Tax Associate in Augusta to join the Bureau of Unemployment Compensation. You will assist employers with tax reporting, ensure accurate wage reports, and apply payments in a timely manner while supporting a dynamic customer service team.

This role requires analytical thinking, strong communication, and attention to detail. After a probationary period, a flexible hybrid remote and in-office schedule is available, reflecting the department's commitment

Department of Labor - Bureau of Unemployment Compensation, Employer Services. Job Class Code: 6504. Grade: 16 (Administrative Services). Salary: $18.76 - $27.03/hour. Location: Augusta. Opening Date: July 30, 2026. Closing Date: August 13, 2026. Do you enjoy working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment? Do you have a great eye for detail and a passion for customer service? The Maine Department of Labor, Bureau of Unemployment Compensation, is seeking an Unemployment Tax Associate. We are looking for ambitious, analytical individuals with excellent communication skills and keen attention to detail to join our growing Customer Support team. In this position you will play a critical role in providing customer service support to employers, ensuring tax and wage reports are filed and payments are applied accurately and timely. We offer a flexible hybrid remote and in office work schedule after a probationary period.

Primary Tasks
  • Provide customer service to employers, resolving questions and issues concerning established Unemployment Tax policy, procedures, and e-services.
  • Research and resolve suspended tax reports and payments.
  • Adjust tax and wage reports when applicable.
  • Reconcile out of balance tax and wage reports.
  • Make liability determinations using established criteria and regulations.
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Integrity: Upholding ethical standards and confidentiality with sensitive financial information.
  • Communication: Ability to assist employers over the phone, or in writing, with reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Patience: Ability to assist potentially frustrated customers and providers with reporting, eligibility, and compliance requirements.

  • Detail Oriented: Ensure that work is accurate.
  • Adaptability: Able to shift tasks as priorities change.
  • Time Management: Able to manage cases are varying points.

Minimum Qualifications Training, education, or experience in office and administrative support work that demonstrates 1) competency in applying a solid knowledge of bookkeeping principles and practices to perform complex work in assisting taxpayers on complex tax matters, and 2) the ability to use independent judgment, initiative, and discretion to make determinations on varied matters. All positions in this classification assume the qualifications of: Accounting Assistant and Accounting Associate I.
