Job summary

Markel is seeking a Finance professional in Richmond, VA to support the Close Control & Reporting (CCR) group by recording and reconciling the financial results for multiple reporting segments and divisions. You will participate in monthly, quarterly and annual close processes and prepare segment packs for leadership review.

Ideal candidates hold a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, 1–3 years of accounting experience, and strong Excel skills. CPA license or candidacy is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Record journal entries and reconcile accounts in compliance with audit requirements.
  • Close monthly, quarterly and annual books and prepare segment packs for Finance leadership.
  • Record loss reserve data and analyze loss ratios.
  • Prepare income statements and balance sheet packages with variances.
  • Complete intercompany wire settlements and balance intercompany accounts.
  • Assist with internal and external audits.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve issues and support business goals.
  • Assist with insurance company financial statements and statutory deadlines.
  • Identify process improvements for greater efficiency.
  • Participate in other strategic accounting projects.

Job description

This position is responsible for recording and reconciling the financial results for various Markel reporting segments, divisions, and insurance companies as part of the Close Control & Reporting (CCR) department within Markel’s finance group. CCR is responsible for the controls and processes around reporting Markel’s division and segment results.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform journal entries and complex account reconciliations including identification and remediation of all issues in compliance with audit requirements.
  • Participate in the monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger closing and reporting processes, including preparation of division and segment pack schedules to be presented to Finance leadership and business management.
  • Perform the accurate and timely recording of loss reserve data into ledger and the analysis of loss ratio results.
  • Assist with the preparation of income statement and balance sheet packages and related comprehensive analysis for variances and trends.
  • Complete intercompany wire settlements and balancing of intercompany accounts.
  • Participate in the internal and external audit process.
  • Work closely with other functional areas (i.e., corporate accounting & reporting, statutory reporting, FP&A, disbursements, treasury, actuarial, reinsurance and program accounting) to resolve issues and support achievement of business goals.
  • Assist with the preparation of insurance company financial statements and ensure compliance with statutory guidance and regulatory deadlines.
  • Collaborate with teammates and initiate ideas with management to identify, design, and implement process improvements for greater efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Participate in other strategic accounting and business projects as they arise.
Education / Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or similar required
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or candidate preferred
Work Experience
  • 1-3 years of accounting experience

  • Strong computer skills including a high degree of proficiency within Excel.
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Motivated individual interested in working in a dynamic environment.
