The Accounting Analyst supports GBU Life’s Finance organization by performing general accounting, reconciliation, financial reporting, investment accounting, and financial analysis activities. The position supports the Controllership function as its primary area of responsibility while providing designated support to Investment Accounting and Finance Operations. This role contributes to the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of GBU Life’s financial records and reporting. The Accounting Analyst performs routine accounting activities, supports monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, research variances and discrepancies, maintains supporting documentation, and assists with internal controls, audit requests, and regulatory reporting activities. The position will develop knowledge of life insurance and annuity accounting, Statutory Accounting Principles, NAIC reporting requirements, investment accounting, and GBU Life’s financial systems and processes. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong attention to detail, analytical ability, accountability, and a commitment to continuous learning and process improvement.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General Accounting and Controllership:
- Prepare routine journal entries, account reconciliations, account analyses, close schedules, and supporting documentation.
- Perform assigned balance sheet and bank reconciliations and investigate and resolve routine discrepancies.
- Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial workpapers and supporting schedules.
- Assist with general ledger activities, transaction review, and financial reporting.
- Monitor assigned accounts and identify unusual activity, variances, or exceptions.
- Research accounting discrepancies and communicate findings and recommendations to appropriate Finance personnel.
- Support accounting activities related to cash, fixed assets, accruals, prepaid expenses, reinsurance recoverables, and other assigned accounting areas.
- Ensure assigned accounting activities are completed accurately and within established deadlines and procedures.
Investment Accounting:
- Provide designated accounting support to GBU Life’s Investment Accounting function.
- Assist with investment accounting reconciliations and supporting analysis.
- Review and analyze information within Clearwater and related investment accounting systems.
- Assist with custodian and investment manager reconciliations.
- Perform or assist with investment subledger to general ledger reconciliations.
- Assist with investment income validation and variance analysis.
- Support preparation and documentation of investment related statutory schedules and reporting.
- Research and elevate investment accounting discrepancies and exceptions in accordance with established procedures.
Financial Reporting and Regulatory Support:
- Assist with financial reporting activities and supporting schedules.
- Assist in preparation of Statutory Financial Statements.
- Develop knowledge of and support accounting requirements applicable to life insurance and annuity operations.
- Assist with activities related to Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and NAIC reporting requirements.
- Prepare supporting documentation for internal and external financial reporting.
- Assist with requests related to regulatory examinations and financial audits.
- Maintain documentation necessary to support accounting conclusions, reconciliations, and reported balances.
Internal Controls and Audit:
- Maintain organized, accurate, and review ready documentation supporting accounting activities and internal controls.
- Assist with internal control testing and documentation as assigned.
- Provide information and supporting documentation for internal and external audit requests.
- Assist in researching audit questions and resolving outstanding requests.
- Follow established accounting policies, procedures, and internal control requirements.
- Identify potential control or process issues and elevate them to appropriate Finance leadership.
Finance Operations Support:
- Provide designated backup support for selected Finance Operations activities.
- Assist with accounts payable, vendor payments, credit card administration, recurring operational entries, and year end information requests as assigned.
- Participate in cross training activities to strengthen departmental knowledge and business continuity.
- Follow established procedures and appropriately elevate issues outside the scope of assigned responsibilities.
Systems, Analysis and Process Improvement:
- Utilize Oracle, Clearwater, Microsoft Excel, and other approved Finance systems to perform accounting and reporting activities.
- Extract, organize, and analyze financial information to support accounting and reporting requirements.
- Use Excel to perform reconciliations, calculations, data analysis, and reporting.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, consistency, and repeatability of accounting processes.
- Assist with documenting and updating Finance procedures, desk instructions, and process documentation.
- Participate in Finance projects and system or process enhancements as assigned.

- Understanding and complying with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures; completing all required training; executing and monitoring controls effectively (as applicable); appropriately identifying, assessing, escalating and remediating risks, potential issues and control failures (as applicable); and reporting compliance or regulatory concerns to management.
- Understanding and conducting oneself in accordance with the Employee Handbook and preserving GBU’s brand and reputation.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Zero to three years of accounting, auditing, financial operations, or related experience. Relevant internship experience may be considered.
- Foundational knowledge of accounting principles, journal entries, general ledger accounting, and account reconciliations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to analyze financial information and investigate discrepancies.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet established deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with Finance and business partners.
- Accounting or audit experience within insurance, financial services, or other regulated industry.
- Exposure to life insurance or annuity accounting.
- Knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles or NAIC reporting requirements.
- Experience with Oracle, Clearwater, or other ERP and investment accounting systems.
- Experience performing financial reconciliations or analyzing financial data.
- Coursework in auditing, financial reporting, investment accounting, data analytics, or related areas.
- Progress toward CPA eligibility or interest in pursuing a CPA or other professional accounting designation.
