Job summary

The Virgin Islands Water & Power Authority is seeking an Accountant II to perform intermediate level accounting work, including analyzing and controlling transactions and maintaining records.

You will prepare monthly financial statements, perform bank reconciliations, and support audits while ensuring accuracy of fixed assets, depreciation, and asset inventories. A Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and at least three years of professional experience are required.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and record equipment, buildings, and other property.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and schedules; audit accounting records and transactions.
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations of major general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare accounting schedules for management and external auditors.
  • Reconcile fixed asset subsidiary ledger with general ledger.
  • Calculate depreciation of fixed assets and conduct physical inventories.
  • Assist auditors with inquiries and audit schedules.
  • Conduct analysis related to fixed assets as requested by management.

Job description

Under general supervision, the Accountant II performs intermediate level professional accounting work involving analyzing and controlling accounting transactions and maintaining accounting records.

  • Identifies and keeps record of all company owned or leased equipment, buildings and other property
  • Records description, value, location and other pertinent information
  • Conducts periodic inventories to keep records up-to-date and to insure that equipment is properly maintained
  • Prepares monthly financial statements and schedules; performs selective auditing of accounting records and transactions
  • Performs monthly bank reconciliations of major general ledger accounts
  • Prepares accounting schedules for management and external auditor's use
  • Performs reconciliation of periodic vendor statements and maintains subsidiary ledger
  • Creates and monitors a system of controls, procedures, and forms for the recordation of fixed assets
  • Tracks the compilation of project costs into fixed asset accounts, and closes out those accounts once the projects have been completed
  • Reconciles the balance in the fix asset subsidiary ledger to the summary level account in the general ledger
  • Reviews and updates the detailed schedule of fixed assets and accumulated depreciation
  • Prepares monthly financial statements and schedules; performs selective auditing of accounting records and transactions
  • Calculates depreciation of all fixed assets, and conducts periodic physical inventory counts of fixed assets
  • Prepares audit schedules relating to fixed assets and assists the auditors in their inquiries
  • Conducts analysis related to fixed assets as requested by management
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and practices as related to a variety of financial transactions
  • Sound knowledge of accounting systems and controls
  • Thorough knowledge of personal computers and different software applications, including Excel
  • Ability to prepare detailed and accurate financial reports
  • Ability to apply accounting theory and principles to a variety of transactions and to analyze accounting records and prepare reports therefrom

Graduate of an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and a minimum of three (3) years of professional accounting experience.
