Job summary

Chartway Credit Union is seeking an Accountant II in Virginia Beach, VA. The role supports the Accounting Manager with general ledger reconciliations, regulatory reporting, and financial statement preparation for CUSO entities and Chartway Promise Foundation.

Hybrid schedule after training is complete. A Bachelor’s degree in accounting and 5–7 years of accounting experience are expected; CPA/CMA candidate is preferred. A competitive benefits package is offered.

Responsibilities

  • Performs reconciliation of General Ledger accounts with higher degree of risk and complexities.
  • Ensures back-office transaction downloads are posted between systems and resolves out of balance conditions.
  • Prepares recurring internal reporting requirements with higher complexity.
  • Prepares recurring external regulatory and compliance reporting requirements.
  • Prepares financial statements for CUSO entities and Chartway Promise Foundation.
  • Participates in month-end/quarter-end closing with complex tasks.
  • Performs review of vendor invoices in BankTEL before payments.
  • Assists in audit schedules and documents preparation.
  • Responds to requests from branches and management within standard turnaround times.
  • Represents Accounting in various credit union projects and delivers assigned tasks.
  • Prepares ad hoc reports and recommendations to streamline processes.

Job description

Job Title: Accountant II

Department Hours: Monday – Friday 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM (Hybrid schedule available after completion of training)

Location: Virginia Beach, Virginia

Hiring Range: $23 - $30 per hour

(Higher compensation may be considered based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity)

The Accountant II is responsible to the Accounting Manager for ensuring accurate general ledger reconcilements and performing tasks in accordance with updated Accounting Department’s Accountabilities List. Ensures adherence to accounting procedures, policies, internal controls, GAAP, Federal Reserve, IRS, state, and federal regulations. Reports discrepancies and inadequacies to the Accounting Manager with solutions or recommendations for improvement.

Responsible And Accountable For
  • Performs reconciliation of General Ledger accounts with higher degree of risk and complexities in accordance with updated Accounting Department’s Accountabilities List. Ensures that all reconciling items are researched, followed up and resolved in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that back-office transaction download files are posted from Episys to Prologue and vice versa. Research/resolve out of balance conditions upon discovery.
  • Prepares recurring internal reporting requirements with higher degree of complexities as outlined in the updated Accounting Department’s Accountabilities List.
  • Prepares recurring external regulatory and compliance reporting requirements with higher degree of complexities as outlined in the updated Accounting Department’s Accountabilities List.
  • Prepares financial statements for CUSO entities and Chartway Promise Foundation.
  • Participates in the month-end/quarter-end closing. Performs assigned tasks with higher degree of complexities using prescribed closing deliverable checklist.
  • Performs other recurring tasks as outlined in the updated Accounting Department’s Accountabilities List.
  • Performs review of vendor invoices in BankTEL before they are posted for payments.
  • Assists in the preparation of audit schedules and documents.
  • Responds to requests from branches, departments, and senior management within the standard turnaround time.
  • Represents Accounting Department in various credit union’s projects, ensuring completion of assigned deliverables.
  • Prepares ad hoc reports and performs other tasks as assigned by the Accounting Manager.
  • Provides recommendations to management for streamlining processes and reducing costs.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to review account reconcilement to ensure timely clearing of outstanding items. Responsible for ensuring necessary research and follow-ups are done.
  • Experience in the preparation of all financial, analysis and statistical reports, consisting of but not limited to: Financial Statements, Capital and Project Budgets, NCUA Call Report, CUSO Accounting, Regulation D Reporting
  • Proficient with Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, and software for the following: General Ledger, Prepaids/Accruals, Accounts Payable, NCUA Reporting, Fixed Assets, ASC 842 Leases
  • Well-versed in general ledger reconciliation and clearing of outstanding items. Ability to research and correct errors in the general ledger.
  • Ability to prepare financial statements, analyses, and ad hoc reports to include statistical and other non-financial reports.
  • Experience in financial consolidation and elimination.
  • Experience in responding to audit findings/queries.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; is detail oriented.
Education And Experience
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience required, CPA/CMA candidate preferred
  • Experience: Approximately 5-7 years experience in an accounting environment with demonstrated accounting system responsibility. Accounts payable experience preferred.
