Job summary

Valdosta State University is seeking an Accountant I in the Accounting & Procurement group to perform basic to intermediate professional accounting work, ensure GAAP compliance, analyze data, and prepare financial statements for internal stakeholders.

Key duties include monitoring revenues and expenses for department accounts, preparing reports, processing expenditures and purchasing documents, balancing ledgers, and assisting with audits.

Qualifications

  • Proficient knowledge of GAAP, especially governmental accounting.
  • Strong Excel and Word skills for reporting and data prep.
  • Excellent analytical and accuracy-oriented approach; detail-focused.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor revenue and expenses for departmental accounts (approx. 20%).
  • Create spreadsheets and prepare data for input into finance, student accounts and HR systems, and generate reports (approx. 15%).
  • Coordinate the preparation of regularly scheduled and special reports (approx. 15%).
  • Review and approve expenditures, personnel, and purchasing documents for funding availability (approx. 15%).
  • Analyze, reconcile, balance, and maintain accounting records; develop budgets and financial reports (approx. 15%).
  • Prepare, review, and process budget, revenue, expense, payroll, student accounts entries; may prepare bank reconciliations (approx. 10%).
  • Interact with and train department staff on finance policies and funding requirements (approx. 5%).
  • Assist in audit activities as assigned (approx. 5%).
