About the Job:

The Accounting department is looking for an Accountant with a strong accounting foundation, an analytical mindset, and a curiosity for finding better ways to get things done. Supporting the Authority's billing and revenue operations, this role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, embraces change, and sees evolving processes as a chance to make meaningful improvements.

The ideal candidate will bring the technical expertise to independently navigate complex reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and manage competing priorities, while remaining open to new ideas and approaches. Working alongside a collaborative team, the Accountant will have the opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen existing practices, and help shape more efficient billing processes through technology and automation. It's a role for someone who values getting the numbers right just as much as finding smarter ways to get there.

At San Diego International Airport, even the work happening behind the scenes leaves a visible impact. From ensuring accurate billing for airlines and concessionaires to managing revenue that supports airport operations, the Accounting team's work helps keep the business of the airport moving. That impact extends beyond the numbers to the people, businesses, and greater San Diego community that rely on the airport every day.

What You’ll Do:
  • Billing & Accounts Receivable: Prepare and review invoices, record payments and cash receipts, maintain customer accounts, monitor outstanding balances, and resolve billing discrepancies.
  • Revenue Accounting & Reconciliation: Analyze and reconcile revenue transactions and general ledger accounts, investigate variances, and ensure accurate application of rates, fees, and charges.
  • Financial Reporting & Close: Prepare journal entries, supporting schedules, and financial analyses; participate in month-end and year-end closing activities and audits.
  • Customer & Stakeholder Support: Respond to billing inquiries and collaborate with airlines, concessionaires, tenants, and internal departments to resolve account issues and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Process Improvement & Team Support: Identify opportunities to strengthen billing and accounting procedures, improve reporting, controls, and automation, and share technical accounting knowledge with team members.
The Skills You Need:
  1. Accounting Expertise & Problem-Solving — Strong understanding of accounting principles, general ledger management, billing, and revenue recognition. Ability to independently investigate discrepancies, reconcile complex accounts, and develop effective solutions.
  2. Adaptability & Change Management — Embraces evolving processes, systems, and priorities with a solutions-oriented mindset. Identifies opportunities for improvement and helps others navigate change.
  3. Analytical & Critical Thinking — Skilled in analyzing financial data, identifying trends and variances, and applying sound judgment to ensure accuracy, resolve issues, and support informed decisions.
  4. Technology & Process Improvement — Proficient in financial systems and Excel, with the ability to leverage technology, improve workflows, and contribute to more efficient billing and reporting processes.
  5. Communication & Collaboration — Builds effective relationships across departments and with external stakeholders. Communicates financial information clearly, resolves inquiries, and shares technical knowledge to support team development.
  6. Accountability & Financial Integrity — Demonstrates accuracy, sound judgment, and attention to detail in financial transactions and reporting. Maintains appropriate internal controls, meets deadlines, and handles sensitive information with discretion.
About the Team:

The Accounting team is collaborative, detail-driven, and committed to financial integrity across the Airport Authority. From supporting the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and monthly close processes to audits and capital project accounting, the team plays a direct role in ensuring accurate reporting and sound financial decision-making. Our work spans accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and cash management, capital improvement projects, investments, and debt. This structure provides exposure to the full financial ecosystem of the airport, while allowing team members to build depth in their areas of focus. The team works closely with departments across the organization, values thoughtful problem-solving, and takes pride in producing reliable, transparent financial information that supports airport operations and long‑term planning.

Within Accounting, the Revenue & Billing team supports the Authority's billing, accounts receivable, cash receipts, revenue reconciliation, and related financial reporting activities. The team works closely with airlines, concessionaires, tenants, and internal departments to resolve issues and maintain accurate financial information. Our environment encourages open communication, independent thinking, curiosity, and a willingness to challenge existing processes. Team members are encouraged to take ownership of their work, bring forward ideas, collaborate on solutions, and look for opportunities to make our processes stronger and more efficient.

The Experience You Need to Have**:
  • Three years of increasingly responsible accounting-related experience, such as accounts receivable, billing, revenue accounting, reconciliation of financial transactions and general ledger accounts, journal entries, month‑end close, financial reporting, or audit support.
  • Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a major in accounting, or a closely related field.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
Preferred Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

Certified Public Accountant (CPA), CPA candidate, Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO), or other relevant accounting or finance certification. Demonstrated advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency is preferred; Excel certification is a plus.
