Job summary

Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is seeking an Accountant to ensure GAAP-compliant accounting, maintain accurate financial statements, and establish strong internal controls within the department’s budgeting and fiscal bureaus.

The position supports cost monitoring, asset database maintenance, and compliance with federal regulations. The incumbent will provide technical assistance to financial contacts and budget analysts and may have career ladder advancement opportunities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting OR 4 years of related accounting experience in lieu of a degree.
• 1 year of related accounting experience.
• Alternative combinations of related experience or education may be considered (e.g., associate’s degree with 3 years of experience; or 5 years of related accounting experience).
• Knowledge of governmental accounting principles and GAAP.
• Advanced Excel is required for financial reporting and analysis.

Responsibilities

• Ensure accounting treatment is recorded in accordance with GAAP.
• Maintain accurate and reliable financial statements.
• Establish and maintain internal controls.
• Conduct financial monitoring for cost efficiency and compliance within the department’s accounting, budgeting and fiscal bureaus.
• Assist with maintaining the MDT assets database and related records.

• Support compliance with complex federal regulations and policy implementation.
• Assist in training or guidance for staff and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Job description

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for an Accountant. This position is responsible for ensuring accounting treatment is recorded in accordance with GAAP, maintain accurate and reliable financial statements, and establish and maintain internal controls. Conducts financial monitoring to ensure cost efficiency and compliance within the Department’s accounting, budgeting and fiscal bureaus. Assists with maintaining the database of MDT assets. This position ensures state compliance with complex federal regulations and establishes goals, objectives and priorities for all accounting functions. Provides technical assistance to division/district financial contacts, budget analysts, and project management to ensure consistent application of policies and procedures. This position is part of a career ladder with career advancement opportunities. This position reports to the Accounting Management Section Supervisor and does not supervise others.

Required Education And Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. OR 4 years of related accounting experience in lieu of a degree.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Ability to use an advanced and functional knowledge of the financial reporting structure and related accounting systems for assigned program(s).

High proficiency in utilizing Excel to complete work.
