Job summary

LHH in Brooklyn, New York, seeks a skilled Grant Accountant to join its nonprofit accounting team. The role focuses on federal and state grant accounting within a mission-driven environment and reports to the Senior Fiscal Director.

Ideal candidates have 3+ years nonprofit grant accounting experience, strong GAAP knowledge, and proficiency with federal/state reporting and invoicing. In-office schedule preferred in Brooklyn near public transit.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of nonprofit grant accounting experience.
  • Strong experience with federal and state grant reporting and compliance.
  • Experience preparing grant invoices and financial reports.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and submit accurate financial reports and grant invoices for federal, state, and local funding.
  • Perform monthly grant financial analysis and monitor budget-to-actual performance.
  • Reconcile grant expenditures and investigate variances.
  • Prepare supporting schedules, amendments, budget modifications, and grant closeouts.
  • Ensure compliance with grant regulations and GAAP.
  • Assist with grant-related audits and provide supporting documentation.
  • Maintain detailed and organized grant records.
  • Collaborate with program leaders and finance staff for reporting and reimbursement.
  • Support monthly and year-end close processes.

Job description

A well-established and growing nonprofit organization is seeking a Grant Accountant to join its accounting team. This role is ideal for someone with strong nonprofit grant accounting experience, particularly with federal and state-funded programs, who enjoys working in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

The organization manages a $75 million operating budget, employs 369 staff members citywide, and offers exceptional benefits, including 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for both employees and their families.

This position reports to the Senior Fiscal Director and joins a fiscal department of 13 accounting professionals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and submit accurate and timely financial reports and grant invoices for federal, state, and local funding agencies.
  • Perform monthly grant financial analysis and monitor budget-to-actual performance.
  • Reconcile grant expenditures and investigate variances.
  • Prepare supporting schedules, amendments, budget modifications, and grant closeouts.
  • Ensure compliance with grant regulations, funding requirements, and GAAP.
  • Assist with grant-related audits and provide supporting documentation.
  • Maintain detailed and organized grant records.
  • Work closely with program leaders and finance staff to ensure accurate reporting and reimbursement.
  • Support monthly and year-end close processes.
Required Experience

Candidates must have hands-on experience managing grants funded by:

  • HUD (Housing and Urban Development) - Required
  • HVRP (Homeless Veterans' Reintegration Program) - Required
  • U.S. Department of Labor - Required
  • Department of Veterans Affairs - Required
  • Office of Mental Health (OMH) - Preferred
  • NYCHA
  • DYCD
  • Other federal and state grant-funded programs

The selected candidate will be responsible for managing multiple federal grant programs, including HUD and Department of Labor-funded initiatives.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
  • Minimum 3 years of nonprofit grant accounting experience
  • Strong experience with federal and state grant compliance and reporting
  • Experience preparing grant invoices and financial reports
  • Knowledge of grant reimbursement processes and funding regulations
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Experience with Fund EZ preferred
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Schedule & Location
  • 4 days per week in office
  • Hours: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
  • Located in Brooklyn, near the G and M subway lines
