Job summary

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. is seeking an accounting professional to prepare financial statements and consolidated reports, analyze reserves and expenditures, and support forecasts and budgets. You will resolve routine questions and escalate complex tasks.

The role requires attention to internal controls, collaboration with other departments, and participation in audits. Relocation is possible within a reasonable distance; pre-employment screenings apply.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred.
  • Experience with journal entries, close processes, and variance analysis.
  • Clear communication and collaborative/teamwork skills.
  • Background checks and pre-employment screening required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in closing and reporting, including journal entries and GL reconciliation.
  • Coordinate with departments and provide financial support for railroads.
  • Analyze financial reports related to reserves, assets, and expenditures.
  • Prepare balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and internal controls; support audits.
  • Contribute to special projects and overall team objectives.

Job Summary:

The person in this position prepares financial statements, consolidated statements, and various other accounting statements and reports; analyzes financial reports and records relative to the accounting of reserves, assets, and expenditures; manages technology and assists in forecasts and budgets; resolves routine questions and problems; and refers more complex tasks to higher levels

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in all phases of closing and reporting of assigned duties, including preparation of journal entries, analysis and reconciliation of general ledger accounts, and analysis of variances in income statement and balance sheet accounts
  • Communicate and coordinate with other departments, including first-line financial contact and support for assigned railroads
  • Analyze financial reports and records relative to the accounting of reserves, assets, and expenditures
  • Prepare analysis and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies and procedures and internal controls
  • Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits in functional area
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
  • Represent the function in special projects and assignments
  • Assist with other projects and perform other duties as required
REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Railroad experience is not required
  • One to three years of related work experience is a plus
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, gather and analyze information skillfully, and develop alternative solutions
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills; ability to focus on resolving conflict, speak and write clearly and persuasively, listen to get clarification, and respond well to questions
  • Ability to build trust by treating customers, peers, and others with integrity and respect, upholding organizational values, and keeping commitments
  • Ability to work as part of a team, balancing team and individual responsibilities and contributing to building a positive team spirit; ability to support everyone’s efforts to succeed
Required Education and Credentials:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is preferred
  • Degrees in finance, business, other related fields, or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience, will also be considered
Employment Requirements:
  • Pre-employment physical, hearing, and vision medical review
  • May be subject to federally mandated drug and alcohol testing including pre-employment drug screening
  • Background screening including conflict of interest, criminal, and motor vehicle driving history
Relocation:

Must live within 50 miles of assigned location or be willing to relocate. Relocation assistance available for this position.
