Job summary

Dayton Metro Library is seeking an Accountant to join our Finance team at the Main Library in downtown Dayton. The role supports day-to-day accounting, budget administration, and financial reporting, with emphasis on internal controls and month-end closing.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of payroll, accounts payable, and fixed assets, plus the ability to communicate clearly with staff and management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration with finance/accounting major; 2–5 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of payroll, accounts payable, and fixed asset procedures.
  • Knowledge of fund and cash basis accounting principles and financial record keeping.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, policy manuals, and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to present information and respond to questions with active listening.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain data on the financial condition and assist with annual budget.
  • Track and record daily cash receipts from the general bank account.
  • Manage department blanket purchase orders and budget adjustments.
  • Assist with end of month journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Develop and maintain internal accounting controls.
  • Maintain fixed asset system and prepare values for insurance renewal.
  • Audit personnel changes prior to biweekly payroll.
  • Process biweekly payroll and manage payroll software; update employee records.
  • Complete timesheet audits and correct distributions.
  • Pay payroll deductions and file payroll taxes/reports timely.
  • Assist with filing government reports (sales tax, 1099s, Ohio taxes) and W-9 compliance.

Job description

The Dayton Metro Library is seeking a full-time Accountant to join our Finance team! This position reports to the Accounting Manager and works at the Main Library in downtown Dayton. This position is responsible for performing and supporting day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the organization, ensuring accuracy, and completeness of financial records. This position plays a key role in general accounting, budget administration, accounts payable, purchasing, financial reporting, month-end and year end closing activities, and maintaining effective internal control. The successful candidate will have experience with accounting practices, payroll routines, and purchasing practices, preferably in a public institution. Join our team today!

Essential Job Duties
  • Assists with maintaining current data on the financial condition of the Library. Provides data and assists with preparation of the annual budget.
  • Tracks and records daily cash receipts from the general bank account.
  • Manages department blanket purchase orders. Responds to encumbered and unencumbered department budget requests and processes department budget adjustments.
  • Assists with end of month journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Assists with developing and maintaining a system of internal accounting controls.
  • Maintains fixed asset system for financial purposes and prepares statement of values for insurance renewal.
  • Audits personnel changes prior to biweekly payroll process.
  • Processes biweekly payroll for DML staff. Manages multiple software applications in order to process payroll. Enters and maintains employee records in software applications.
  • Completes timesheet audits and timesheet batching. Corrects account distributions and reviews all batches.
  • Pays payroll deductions. Files and pays payroll taxes and associated reports accurately and timely.
  • Assists with the filing of government reports, such as sales tax returns, employee census, 1099s, Ohio withholding taxes, Ohio Worker’s Compensation and ensures W-9 compliance, in advance of filing.
Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university in business administration-preferably with a major in finance or accounting; and two to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Knowledge of payroll, accounts payable, and fixed asset procedures.
  • Knowledge of fund and cash basis accounting principles and financial record keeping requirements.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, policy and procedure manuals and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, coworkers and members of the community. Ability to apply active listening skills.
Compensation and Benefits:

The starting hourly rate for this position is $23.95. (Those applicants with a relevant Master’s degree may qualify for the professional offset, which would increase the hourly rate by $3.09 per hour.) Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance along with paid time off and OPERS retirement. This position is open until filled.
