Job summary

Purpose Statement

The job of Accompanist is done for the purpose/s of providing accompaniment for rehearsals and performances; assisting with classroom clerical tasks; and serving as an instructional resource for students and teachers in the area of fine arts.

Essential Functions

  • Accompanies student(s) during the regular classroom schedule and for performances outside of the regular school day for the purpose of supporting the music staff and/or students.
  • Analyzes assigned music prior to rehearsal (e.g. correct tempos, challenging transitions, dynamics, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring efficient use of rehearsal time and performance schedules.
  • Assists the music instructor in supervising student music activities for the purpose of efficient use of class time and maintaining a positive learning environment.
  • Assists instructor(s) in rehearsals in rhythm, voice line, voice quality, diction, and enunciation for the purpose of training students in a wide range of vocal skills.
  • Exhibits professional and stage etiquette for the purpose of serving as a model of professionalism at musical productions.
  • Maintains student and department records and materials (e.g. classroom attendance, music library (choir), student folders, etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to-date reference and audit trail.
  • Oversees a variety of activities (e.g. ticket sales, student show program production, annual fund raising event/s, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring completion in line with district requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective use of the music department.
  • Rehearses with choral groups and individual student practices and recitals for the purpose of playing full and sectional accompaniment.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: displaying stage etiquette; reading open score music; operating instruments and/or equipment commonly used for accompaniment; and operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: music style periods; performance practices; and music score reading.

ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of types of job‑related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: being attentive to detail; working as part of a team and with frequent interruptions; working non‑standard hours; traveling with the choral group; adhere to district policies; regular attendance except when taking approved leave.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to effect the organization’s services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 30% walking, and 20% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience Job related experience within a specialized field with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
