Job summary

The University of Texas at Arlington is seeking a Disability Services Counselor to assess and determine eligibility for academic accommodations for students with disabilities.

You will manage a caseload at the SAR Center, collaborating with faculty and staff to develop and coordinate access across all courses and spaces. A Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience are required; a Master's and three years of case management is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and three years in disability-related academic or clinical setting.
  • Master's degree and three years of case management experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a caseload of SAR Center students; meets with students and develops accommodations.
  • Analyzes information to determine eligibility for disability services and accommodations.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with students and documents progress in AIM system.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to coordinate accommodations across spaces.
  • Provides information, consultations, and referrals to departments, staff, students, and external contacts.
  • Participates in SAR Center Documentation Review Committee to ensure consistent determinations.
  • Attends conferences, meetings, trainings, and committees related to disability services.

Job description

Purpose of Position

Provides assessment, eligibility determination, provision of academic accommodations, and other support services as needed for students with disabilities at the University of Texas at Arlington. All activities shall promote equal access for students and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (2008) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in academic programs at the university. Maintains a caseload of students with a variety of disabilities who are registered with the Student Access & Resource Center (SAR Center). Interacts with others on campus as needed to facilitate equal access for students and provide resources for faculty and staff.

Essential Functions
  • Manages a caseload of students registered with the SAR Center by meeting with students, discussing needs and goals, developing accommodation plans, and supporting access to courses, programs, and services.
  • Analyzes information during student appointments, educational and medical records, psychological assessments, and diagnostic evaluations to determine eligibility for disability services and appropriate academic accommodations.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with students throughout the academic semester to resolve disability-related concerns, evaluate accommodation effectiveness, and document progress in the AIM system.
  • Collaborates with faculty, staff, and other campus partners through the interactive process to develop, implement, and coordinate student accommodation plans and access throughout all institutional spaces.
  • Provides accommodation-related information, consultation, and referrals to university departments, faculty, staff, students, and external contacts.
  • Participates in the SAR Center Documentation Review Committee to evaluate documentation, assess student needs, and support consistent eligibility and accommodation determinations.
  • Attends and participates in conferences, meetings, trainings, workshops, outreach activities, and committees related to disability services, student access, and the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in vocational rehabilitation, counseling, psychology, social work, special education, or a related field and three (3) years of experience working in a disability-related academic or clinical setting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in vocational rehabilitation, counseling, psychology, social work, special education, or a related field, and three (3) years of case management experience working with students with disabilities or in a disability office on a higher education campus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, 2008) and how it applies to higher education.
  • Knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) and applicable differences between K-12 and higher education services.
  • Proficiency in various modes of counseling.
  • Ability to interpret psycho-educational evaluations.
  • Ability to assess and identify academic accommodation needs.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL) at an intermediate level is preferred.
Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday; 8:00am through 5:00pm
